Lady Hawks Downed in Friday Twinbill at Bellarmine

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team rallied against Bellarmine in Game 2, but the Knights pulled out a doubleheader sweep in Louisville, Ky. on Friday (April 17) afternoon by scores of 6-0 and 6-5.

In Game 1, Bellarmine pitchers Ally Foster and Alicia Miller were in control, scattering four hits in the combined shutout. Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) started the game with a double to center field, but Foster retired the next five batters she faced via the strikeout until senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) drew a two-out walk in the second.

The Knights (29-11, 17-5 GLVC), who are ranked sixth in the Midwest Region rankings, scored an unearned run in the second on Marlee Tevis's RBI single off starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.). Bellarmine tacked on three more in the third – one on a leadoff homer by Hannah Daunhauer and two more on Amy Feie's single.

Suellentrop and freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) singled to put two on with one out in the fifth off Miller, but she got a pair of strikeouts to escape the inning.

The hosts made it 6-0 with two more runs in the fourth inning for the final margin.

Foster (16-2) earned the win, tossing four shutout innings. She struck out nine and walked one. Miller surrendered three hits in three relief innings, but kept Quincy (18-22, 7-15 GLVC) quiet for her third save of the season.

Harbison (4-5) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings. She recorded one strikeout. Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandberg) allowed two runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

In Game 2, the Knights opened the scoring in the first inning with a run off QU starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.).

The Lady Hawks took their first lead of the day with a pair of runs in the third inning. Senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) led off with a double and pinch runner Taylor Dralle (Camp Point, Ill./Central) went to third on a wild pitch. Dralle would eventually score on a grounder by Burton, who reached on an error. Burton went all the way to third on the play and scored on a fielder's choice by Viken to give QU a 2-1 lead.

Tevis's RBI groundout in the fourth tied the game at 2-2 before the Knights scored four unearned runs with the help of two Quincy errors in the fifth to give the hosts a 6-2 lead.

Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) led off the sixth with her team-leading ninth home run of the season to cut it to 6-3. Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) followed with consecutive singles. Topps would score on an error and Viken's RBI single drove in Greene to trim the deficit to 6-5.

Foster, who came on in relief in the seventh, retired Quincy in order in the seventh to end the game.
