Lady Hawks Fall to Saints 5-4

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University women's tennis team fell to Maryville University on Saturday (Apr. 11) 5-4 to close out the Great Lakes Valley Conference season. It is the second straight season that QU lost to MU 5-4 in the final match of the GLVC regular season to eliminate the Lady Hawks from the GLVC Tournament.

The final tournament spot in the GLVC West was a three-way tie between William Jewell College, Rockhurst University, and Quincy. All three teams finished 2-4. Rockhurst beat WJC and lost to QU. QU beat RU and lost to WJC. WJC beat QU but lost to RU. All three of the teams also beat Truman State University. Rockhurst beat William Jewell 6-3 and the rest of the matches were 5-4. According to the third tiebreaker, the team with the best games won to games lost percentage would advance. Rockhurst advanced with the one game margin of victory.

The Lady Hawks (13-6, 2-4 GLVC) won the first two doubles matches against the Saints (10-8, 4-2 GLVC) to take the early lead 2-1. Amy Kuhle and Sydney Lynch continued on their impressive doubles season in the number one slot. The sophomore and freshman respectively won the first match 8-6 to improve to 21-3 this season. Elizabeth Kuenzi and Gabi Papachrisanthou also recorded an 8-6 win for the Lady Hawks in the second doubles match.

Amy Kuhle kept the momentum going with a 6-1, 6-3 singles win in the first match. Elizabeth Kuenzi won the third singles match 7-6, 6-4 to pull off a close win in the third singles match.

Maryville won the second singles match and trailed 4-2 going into the final three matches. The Saints won the last three matches to steal the victory and a GLVC Tournament berth from QU.

The Lady Hawks will finish their season in Springfield, Ill. against the University of Illinois Springfield in a non-conference match on Sunday (Apr. 12).
