QU Wins Two Against Rockhurst in Last At-Bat

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team won a pair of dramatic, crucial games over Rockhurst on Saturday (April 11) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. QU won in its final at-bat in both games, picking up a 10-6 win in Game 1 before taking the nightcap, 2-1, in eight innings.

The Lady Hawks (16-20, 7-13 GLVC) climbed into 11th place in the GLVC standings with the top eight teams advancing to the GLVC Tournament. There is plenty of work still to be done, but Saturday's doubleheader showed the Lady Hawks can win in a slugfest or a pitchers' duel.

Coming off a couple losses to William Jewell on Friday, the Lady Hawks stormed out of the gate in Saturday's opener with Rockhurst (21-15, 12-10 GLVC), scoring three runs in the first inning off Demi Plathe.

The rally started with two outs as junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) singled and stole second. She would score on an RBI double by senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) to give QU a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) then lifted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in center field for her first home run of the season.

Sophomore starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) was masterful early on, striking out seven in the first three shutout innings.

QU tacked on another run in the third as senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) doubled and went to third on a fielder's choice as she beat the throw from Plathe, who fielded Scrum's grounder. Scrum and Ley then attempted to execute a double steal with Scrum taking off for second. Scrum was tagged out in a rundown, but Ley was able to score, stretching the lead to 4-0.

Harbison kept the visitors quiet in the fourth, but Rockhurst broke through for five in the fifth as Lexie Zuniga delivered the big blow – a go-ahead two-run homer.

Quincy loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but reliever Bridgette Sappington got a couple strikeouts to keep it 5-4.

The Lady Hawks loaded the bases again with one out in the sixth, but Scrum stroked a two-run double in the gap to give QU a 6-5 lead. Two Rockhurst errors extended the inning and allowed two runs to score before freshman Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) rapped a two-run double that broke it open, 10-5.

Rockhurst added a single run in the seventh, but reliever Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) secured the victory.

Harbison (3-4) earned the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. She struck out a season-high nine batters. Scrum was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI. McLaughlin was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI and senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) was 2-for-3 with a double.

The teams were even at nine hits apiece. Sappington was saddled with a loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Game 2 was anything but a slugfest as Sappington and Armstrong squared off in a duel of matching zeroes on the scoreboard. Both teams were without a hit until Zuniga singled off Armstrong in the fourth.

Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) poked a one-out single through the legs of the Rockhurst third baseman and went to second on the error. Ley followed it up by sending a liner into the gap for an RBI double and the first run of the game.

Armstrong retired the first two batters in the seventh on five pitches, but Plathe homered to left-center for her first hit of the day to tie the game at 1-1. After a double, freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) came on in relief and retired Rachel Evans on a pop out.

Armstrong set down Rockhurst in order to keep the game tied in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) singled through the hole on the left side and went to second on Viken's sac bunt. Following Ley's walk, Scrum hit a fly ball to right field that landed over the head of Kelsey Dean and Burton flew around third and slid in for the game-winning run.

Griskell (2-1) picked up the win, tossing a perfect 1 1/3 innings of relief. Armstrong finished with a line of one earned run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked one.

Sappington (17-7) suffered her second loss of the day, allowing two runs on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. She struck out seven.

Ley reached three times, going 1-for-2 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and RBI double. Viken, Scrum and Burton had QU's other three hits. Rockhurst out-hit Quincy, 5-4.

The Lady Hawks return to the field on Wednesday (April 15) at 2 p.m. when they take on Lincoln in a nonconference doubleheader at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
