Hawks Fall in Straight Sets to #2 Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a straight-set MIVA match to No. 2 Lewis on Saturday (April 11) night at Pepsi Arena, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17.

The Flyers (22-2, 13-1 MIVA) hit .486 in the match with 45 kills and 11 errors on just 70 attacks. Quincy played well offensively, hitting .222, but could not keep up with the Flyers, who sit in first place in the MIVA.

Quincy never led in either of the first two sets, despite out-hitting the Flyers (.462 to .458) in the opening frame. Quincy was still hitting at a .311 clip through Set 2, but Lewis fired at a .619 percentage.

Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) picked up a service ace to give QU a 3-2 lead in Set 3, but the Flyers went on a 14-5 run to take a 16-8 lead they would not relinquish.

Kelso led the Hawks with nine kills (.263) and junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) added eight kills (.375). Junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Ill./Francis Howell North) put down six kills (.250). Gamache led the back row with four digs. Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 27 assists and had three blocks – one solo.

Geoff Powell paced the Flyers with 12 kills (.667) and Greg Petty had 11 kills (.368). Powell also had a match-high six digs. Lewis had a slight advantage in blocks, 7-6, and service aces, 5-4.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Friday (April 11) at 7 p.m. for their final regular season match, taking on Lindenwood at Pepsi Arena.
