Lady Hawks Drop Pair To William Jewell

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday (April 10) afternoon to William Jewell, 10-4 and 4-3, at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

In Game 1, the Lady Hawks (14-20, 5-13 GLVC) got off to a great start against William Jewell (21-16, 9-11 GLVC) starter Nona Pauline, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) drew a leadoff walk before being eliminated on a fielder's choice. Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) followed with an RBI double to left to give QU a 1-0 lead. After senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) drew a one-out walk, sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) ripped a two-run double into the left-center gap to stretch the lead to 3-0.

QU starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) evaded trouble in the second, leaving the bases loaded to keep the Cardinals off the board.

Freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) doubled with one out in the second and scored on Viken's groundout to extend the lead to 4-0.

Armstrong ran into trouble with two outs in the third as the Cardinals loaded the bases with three walks. The visitors got a run on a wild pitch before the fourth walk of the inning loaded bases for Shelby McGraw, who deposited the first pitch she saw over the fence for a grand slam and a 5-4 lead for the Cards.

The Cardinals turned to Faith Song in the circle to relieve Pauline and Song (5-2) held the QU lineup in check, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings on just three hits.

William Jewell scored an unearned run in the fifth and added four in the sixth, including a two-run homer by McGraw, who finished with six RBI in the game.

Armstrong (6-9) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. She struck out three. Freshman Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning for Quincy. Topps led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.

In Game 2, the Cardinals opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Brooke Bernard and Pauline. They tacked on single, unearned runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead into the fourth.

Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) smashed her team-leading eighth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Greene and freshman Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each singled before Burton ripped a two-run triple to cut the William Jewell lead to 4-3. Song came on to replace McGraw, who started for the Cards, and retired Viken and Ley to end the inning.

Meanwhile, sophomore reliever Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) kept Jewell of the board in the final four innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out three with no walks.

Two Lady Hawks reached in the sixth, but Song escaped with a double play before setting down QU in order in the seventh.

Burton was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) added two hits. Topps reached base twice on a pair of walks.

Quirk (5-7) took the loss for Quincy, surrendering four runs (two earned) on eight hits in three innings. She struck out two. McGraw (8-5) earned the win for the visitors, allowing three runs on six hits. Song picked up her first save of the season.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Saturday (April 11) when they play host to Rockhurst (21-13, 12-8 GLVC), which split a doubleheader with Truman State on Friday.
