Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Brendan Bittner

Hawks Fall in Three to #5 Loyola Chicago

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team nearly took a set off No. 5 Loyola Chicago on Friday (April 10), but the Ramblers pulled out a sweep at Pepsi Arena, 25-21, 25-19, 32-30.

For some perspective on how difficult it is to get a set off Loyola, the Ramblers (19-2, 11-2 MIVA) have lost two conference matches to No. 2 Lewis and have not lost a set in any other conference match. They have lost just 11 sets in 21 matches this season.

The Hawks (13-12, 5-9 MIVA) had the Ramblers on the ropes in Set 3 as both teams were very good offensively on Friday night. Loyola fought off five set points in the final frame and eventually took a 29-28 lead after a Tyler Novotny service error.

Following a Quincy timeout, Novotny hit his next serve into the net to tie it at 29-29. Novotny picked up a kill before Gamache would even it with one of his own. The Hawks then committed a service error and Novotny ended the set with a kill. The Hawks hit .464 in Set 3, getting four kills each from sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central).

In Set 1, the Ramblers took an 18-14 lead before Quincy rallied for four straight points with sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) serving to tie it at 18 apiece. Loyola then reeled off the next four points and took the set, 25-21. Loyola hit .483 in the opening frame and QU hit at a .417 clip.

The Ramblers led Set 2, 17-15, and closed the set on an 8-4 run to take a two-set lead into the intermission.

Loyola out-hit Quincy, .438 to .296, and beat the Hawks in kills, 45-38. QU's hitting percentage was its third-highest of the season against a conference opponent.

Gamache led the Hawks offensively with 11 kills (.318) to go with four digs and two blocks. Kelso added nine kills (.438) and junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) ended the match with seven kills (.176). Fanfulik and Rogan had five digs apiece to lead the defense.

Thomas Jaeschke paced the visitors with 13 kills (.458) and setter Peter Hutz finished with a double-double (40 assists, 11 digs).

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (April 11) at 7 p.m. when they take on No. 2 Lewis (21-2, 12-1 MIVA), which is riding a six-match winning streak after a sweep of Lindenwood on Friday.
