Hawks Split Midweek at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team and Truman State University played to a split on Wednesday (Apr. 1) afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference midweek game.  The first game was an offensive slugfest with 36 total hits and 16 runs.  QU had 19 hits and 10 runs to win the first game 10-6.  Game two was a pitchers' duel that ended on a walk-off squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh inning.  TSU stole a 2-1 win to split the series.  David Jacob was seven for eight on the day with four RBI.

David Jacob singled to right center in the second inning of game one to start what would be a dominating day at the plate for the sophomore.  Ryan Snyder doubled down the left field line and Peter Cunningham followed with a fly out to right field to bring home Jacob on a sacrifice.  The Hawks (16-7, 12-2 GLVC) took an early 1-0 lead.

Truman State (17-7, 9-5 GLVC) scored four runs in the bottom half of the second inning started by a Chris Iliopoulos two-run homerun to right field.  Zak Larkin hit a sacrifice fly and Paul Trenhaile singled to score the other two runs of the inning giving TSU a 4-1 lead.

The QU offense started to chip away in the fourth inning.  With the bases loaded, Kory Wisdom drew a walk to score one.  Two batters later, David Jacob singled through the right side to score Justin Blechle and Brynn Martinez to tie the game at 4-4.

Justin Blechle gave the Hawks the lead with a two-run blast to right field in the fifth inning.

The Hawks started to pile it on in the seventh when Justin Blechle reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt that sent the ball down the right field line.  Brynn Martinez singled through the right side with the infield in to score one run.  Kory Wisdom doubled down the left field line with Martinez on the move to score the speedy shortstop from first base.  Three batters later, Ryan Snyder singled to left field to score Wisdom giving QU a 9-4 lead.

The Bulldogs answered with three straight singles to load the bases in the bottom half of the seventh.  With two outs, Zak Larkin singled to right center to score two runs.

Tommy Hager came in for the eighth inning and held Truman scoreless.  David Jacob provided an insurance run with an RBI double scoring Dominic Miles in the ninth.  Teddy Rule loaded the bases in the ninth, but held the Bulldogs scoreless to give the Hawks the win in game one.

Shane Strom (W, 1-0) tossed his first two innings of the season for the Hawks to earn the win with a scoreless fourth and fifth inning.

David Jacob finished game one five for five with one run scored and three RBI.  Kory Wisdom was three for four with two RBI and a run scored.  Justin Blechle was like a second lead-off man in the ninth spot going three for five with two RBI and three runs scored.

The Hawks and Bulldogs combined to leave 29 runners on base in the first game.

Truman State started the scoring in game two in an unconventional way.  Zak Larkin singled and then advanced to third on a ground out and fly out.  The base umpire called a balk on Jason O'Brien (L, 1-2) to allow Zak Larkin to score the first run.  It would be the only run until the sixth inning.

Jason O'Brien had his best outing of the season allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks.  O'Brien fired six strikeouts in six and a third innings.  The senior southpaw got better as the game progressed with four of his six strikeouts in the fifth and sixth inning.

Cody Gardner (W, 5-1) bested O'Brien and the Hawk offense with a complete game six hitter.  Gardner allowed one run with three strikeouts.

Brynn Martinez led off the sixth inning for the Hawks with an infield single to shortstop.  Kory Wisdom laid down a sacrifice bunt that drew the third baseman in.  Martinez wheeled his way to third base noticing that no Bulldog was there to cover the bag.  With two outs, David Jacob was clutch again with a single to right field to tie the game 1-1.

The Bulldogs came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied 1-1.  After one out, T.J. Wood doubled down the right field line.  He advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Zak Larkin walked to put runners at the corners.  Jarod Hahn laid down a bunt toward first base with Wood breaking towards home to win the game on a walk-off squeeze.

The Hawks win streak ended at 12 games with the series split.  QU still holds a three game lead in the GLVC West.

The Hawks welcome William Jewell College on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 3-4) to QU Stadium for a GLVC four-game series.  The doubleheaders for both days start at noon.
