Cardinals Tie Hawks Atop the GLVC West

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team fell to William Jewell College in the day one doubleheader on Friday (Apr. 3).  WJC put it on QU early in game one taking a 12-2 lead.  The Hawks were able to score six runs in the seventh inning, but fell 12-8 to the Cardinals.  The WJC pitching staff along with QU mistakes gave the Cardinals a 7-2 win in game two.  The Hawks had four errors and 19 walks and hit batters combined in the two games today.

The Hawks (16-9, 12-4 GLVC) took the lead in the first inning when Dominic Miles launched a towering homerun to right field on to the football field for a two-run shot.  Kory Wisdom scored on the Miles blast.

The Cardinals (21-6, 12-4 GLVC) were able to take the lead in the fourth inning.  WJC scored one run on an error in the second and strung together a single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals exploded for five runs in the fifth inning including a bases clearing double to right center to score three.

WJC scored another four runs in the seventh inning with three singles and a walk to take a 12-2 lead.

The Hawks scored six in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The big bang came with an opposite field homerun from Peter Cunningham that scored three runs for the Hawks.  QU trailed by just four runs with six outs left.

Chris Mancha came in for the Cardinals and shut down the Hawks for the final two innings to give WJC a 12-8 win.

In game two, Graham Spraker (L, 2-1) tossed six and two thirds innings allowing seven runs, but just one run was earned.  Spraker struck out seven.

The Cardinals scored first with a ground out in the first inning to third base to score one run.  They added a run in the third inning on a hit batter with the bases loaded.  The Cardinals scored twice more in the fourth inning on a first and third play and a single to take a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks got on the board in the fifth inning when Kory Wisdom singled to score JP Meyer.

Brynn Martinez singled in the seventh to score Gordon Gundaker, but the Hawks fell 7-2.

The Cardinals and Hawks finish their weekend series with a doubleheader at QU Stadium tomorrow (Apr. 4) starting at noon.
