QU Bats Stay Hot In Florida Sun, Hawks Take Two

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team continued its string of solid play by picking up a pair of four-run wins in Clermont, Fla. on Sunday (March 8). The Lady Hawks defeated Wilmington (Del.), 6-2, before claiming a 9-5 victory over Hillsdale.

With the wins, Quincy improves to 5-1 on its Florida swing and 6-4 overall. QU is now 4-1 against in-region opponents on the trip, the only loss coming to Ashland, which is 11-1 on the season.

The main story on Sunday, as it has been for the Lady Hawks' last six games, was their offense. The lineup pounded 19 hits and scored 15 runs. They are averaging seven runs per game on this road trip.

Quincy opened up a lead in the second inning against Wilmington (5-2) on an RBI single by sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) that plated junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central), who tripled to start the inning. Senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) delivered an RBI single in the third inning to make it 3-0.

The runs came in support of senior starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.), who was effective in a complete game effort.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but Armstrong settled down to retire the next nine hitters to keep Wilmington off the board.

The Lady Hawks provided three insurance runs with the help of two errors in the sixth to break the game open. Suellentrop and junior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) each had RBI singles in the inning.

Seven players had hits for the Lady Hawks and Powers was the only player with two. Armstrong (2-2) surrendered just two runs (one earned) on four hits. She walked one and did not record a strikeout in picking up the victory.

The Hawks overcame two three-run deficits in the nightcap to pull out the 9-5 win over Hillsdale.

The Chargers (1-3) started the game with three runs – one earned – in the first inning off freshman starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.), who gave up a two-run single to Ainsley Ellison that sparked the scoring for Hillsdale.

Quincy responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of unearned runs as senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single by Greene, who extended her hitting streak to nine games. Topps, who singled with one out, scored on a double-steal attempt with Greene getting thrown out going to second.

Hillsdale tacked on a couple runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead before the Lady Hawks responded with four in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) and Topps both reached base before Suellentrop's RBI single scored Scrum. Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Quirk helped her own cause with a three-run double that gave the Hawks a 6-5 lead.

Quirk settled in on the rubber after that, allowing just one hit in the final four innings and only one runner to reach second base.

QU added three more runs in the fifth as Ley delivered a two-run triple, followed by Quirk's sacrifice fly to make it 9-5.

Quirk (3-2) picked up the win, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in a complete game. She did not allow a walk and struck out three. Quirk also led the offense, driving in four runs. Topps added three hits and a walk and scored three runs. Greene and Scrum had two hits apiece.

The Lady Hawks will have Monday (March 9) off before returning to the field on Tuesday (March 10) for games against Tiffin and Concordia-St. Paul.
