Lady Hawks Keep Rolling With Two More Wins

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team won two more games on the penultimate day of its 10-game swing at the NTC College Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Lady Hawks topped Tiffin, 4-1, in an in-region game before knocking off Concordia St. Paul, 6-2, in the nightcap.

The Lady Hawks (8-4) have now won four straight and are 7-1 in their eight games in Florida.

Tuesday's opener against Tiffin (4-6) looked like it would be a pitcher's duel between QU freshman Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) and Tiffin starter Sarah Brown. The teams combined for just three hits through the first three innings.

In the fourth, Quirk stranded a runner on second to keep the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the inning. Junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) and senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) each drew walks, and with two outs, senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) and Quirk delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.

A pair of doubles off Quirk in the fifth cut the lead in half, 2-1, but the Lady Hawks tacked on a couple insurance runs on a two-run homer by Ley, who scored two runs in the game.

Quirk pitched around a leadoff walk in the seventh to secure the win. She tossed a complete game, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the nightcap against Concordia St. Paul, the Lady Hawks got on the board in the top of the first as junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill/UT-Martin) doubled and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.). Greene had her nine-game hitting streak snapped in Tuesday's first game.

Quincy loaded the bases with two down in the first, but couldn't add on to its lead. The Golden Bears (6-7) tied the game with an RBI single by Haley Schanks in the bottom of the second off QU starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.).

The Lady Hawks regained the lead for good in the third inning as Ledbetter knocked in Greene with an RBI single and senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) pounded a three-run homer to give Quincy a 5-1 lead.

Concordia got a run back in the fifth, but Scrum's RBI single in the sixth provided the final tally of the game.

Armstrong (3-2) struck out a career-high nine batters in a complete game effort. She lowered her season ERA to 1.75.

Scrum and Greene each had two hits in the game, while senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) drew three walks and scored a run from the No. 5 spot in the order.

The Lady Hawks will look to keep their winning streak intact on Wednesday (March 11) – their final day at the NTC Spring Games. QU takes on Northern State (7-5) at 9 a.m. ET before taking on No. 24 West Virginia Wesleyan (4-4) at 11 a.m. ET.
