QU Offense Quieted on Final Day in Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team closed its 10-game schedule at the NTC College Spring Games with a couple of low-scoring, narrow defeats on Wednesday (March 11) morning in Clermont, Fla.

The Lady Hawks dropped the morning's first game, 2-1, to Northern State before falling to West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-2. Quincy (8-6) finished its Florida trip with a 7-3 record and averaged 5.5 runs per game.

Against Northern State, the Lady Hawks threatened early by loading the bases in the first inning, but they could only manage one run on a fielder's choice by senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East).

After that, the game turned into a pitcher's duel as freshman starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) stifled the Wolves (8-5) through the first four innings, allowing just two hits. NSU finally knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Lauren Kunz.

Meanwhile, Northern State starter Kami Smesmo settled into a rhythm against the Lady Hawks, who scattered three singles over innings 2-6 without a runner reaching second base.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolves scored the game-winning run on an RBI double by Erin Yancy.

Quincy put runners on first and second with two out in the top of the seventh, but senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) grounded out to end the game.

Quirk (4-3) suffered the defeat, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. She struck out four and walked just one. Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin), who singled and scored in the first went 3-for-4 to lead the QU offense.

Quincy and West Virginia Wesleyan – receiving votes outside the Top 25 in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll – were scoreless heading into the fourth inning with senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) in the circle for the Lady Hawks.

The Bobcats (6-4) got on the board in the top of the fourth with an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.

The QU lineup was held in check by freshman Hannah Vet, who allowed just one hit – a second-inning single by Topps – through the first five frames.

The Bobcats broke the game open in the top of the sixth with three runs – one earned – on the help of a Quincy error.

Quincy finally broke through with a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) ripped a double and Scrum followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. The Lady Hawks proceeded to load the bases with another single and an error, but a strikeout ended the potential go-ahead rally.

Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) powered a solo home run – her team-leading third – in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Hawks were not able to rally.

Armstrong (3-3) took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits in five innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) worked the final two innings and allowed just one hit.

The Lady Hawks will play their home and GLVC opener on Saturday (March 14) at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex where they will welcome Lewis for a noon doubleheader.
