Lewis Shuts Down Quincy Lineup in Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (March 14), but Lewis shut down the QU offense, sweeping a doubleheader from the Lady Hawks, 1-0 and 4-2, at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

Flyers starter Kelly Bowler tossed a no-hitter in Game 1 before Lainie Schweickert held Quincy to two runs on three hits in Game 2.

The Lady Hawks (8-8, 0-2 GLVC) entered the day hitting .290 as a team and one of the top offensive clubs in the GLVC, but they could not solve the Flyers (11-6, 2-0 GLVC), hitting .065 (3-for-46) on Saturday.

In Game 1, Quincy threatened with a pair of walks in the first inning as junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) and senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) drew consecutive one-out free passes, but Bowler escaped trouble by forcing a pair of groundouts.

Lewis got on the board in the second inning when Sarah DeMasi doubled, went to third on a bunt and scored on a groundout.

That manufactured run was all the Flyers would need in the opener. Quincy stranded five runners in the game, drawing three walks and a two hit batsmen off Bowler. Scrum reached on an error in the sixth, but was left at second base.

Bowler (9-3) struck out four in her no-hitter. Senior starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) retired eight in a row at one point, but was tagged with the tough-luck loss. Armstrong (3-4) allowed just one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in a complete game effort. Brittany Russell was the only Lewis player with two hits.

In the early innings, Game 2 went much the same way as the opener as Schweickert retired the first eight batters of the game.

Lewis tagged QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) for two runs on four hits in the third inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Flyers added two more in the fifth before the Lady Hawks recorded their first hit of the day in the bottom of the inning. Quirk singled, junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) walked and Scrum singled to load the bases with two down before sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Quincy's first run. The threat ended as Schweickert struck out Topps to end the inning.

Quincy still had a chance to win the game in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs off Schweikert. Lewis then turned to Bowler, who walked Greene to make it 4-2. Bowler then got a strikeout, fly out and groundout consecutively to end the game with the bases loaded.

Ledbetter reached base three times with a single and two walks to lead the offense. Greene drove in both runs on walks. The Flyers out-hit the Lady Hawks, 10-3, in Game 2, led by DeMasi's 3-for-4 performance. QU stranded nine runners on base.

Quirk (4-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) pitched one-hit ball in 2 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out three, including two straight to end the fifth with the bases loaded.

The Lady Hawks will look to rebound on Sunday (March 15) when they return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex to take on UW-Parkside (4-11, 0-2 GLVC). First pitch is slated for noon.
