Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Guide QU To Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team bounced back from a frustrating couple of losses on Saturday (March 14) to sweep UW-Parkside, 2-0 and 6-2, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday (March 15) at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

Senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) tossed her first career shutout in Game 1, limiting the Rangers (4-13, 0-4 GLVC) to just five hits over seven innings, while the offense came up with a couple of timely hits to get the win.

Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) set the tone for the day, leading off the bottom of the first inning with an opposite-field home run to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead. It was her second home run of the year.

Armstrong held onto the lead for the rest of the game as Courtney Ellingson was able to keep the QU lineup off balance in the middle innings.

Armstrong got help from her defense, which played a clean game behind her and helped the Rangers strand seven runners in the game. UW-Parkside scattered five hits off the senior, but the visitors did not get a runner into scoring position until the seventh.

Quincy (10-8, 2-2 GLVC) doubled their lead by that point as senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and eventually scored on a clutch, two-out single by pinch hitter Jessi Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu).

The Rangers put two runners on against Armstrong in the seventh, but she induced a chopper right back to the mound to end the game.

Armstrong (5-4) threw 60 of her 97 pitches for strikes, getting five strikeouts and walking two in her five innings of work. She allowed just one earned run (0.50 ERA) in 14 innings on the weekend.

Scrum was 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the QU offense. Topps also reached base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

In Game 2, the Rangers struck first on a two-run homer by Kalli Gosser that gave them a 2-0 lead.

Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill.) answered with a one-out solo home run to straightaway center field to cut the lead in half. It was her first homer of the season.

Freshman starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) bounced back nicely from the home run, retiring the next four batters she faced and kept the Rangers off the board through the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Quincy took its first lead of the game as Scrum singled and senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) crushed a 1-1 pitch for a two-run home run off Amber Ramos that gave the Lady Hawks a 3-2 edge. Ley now has a team-leading four home runs on the season.

Sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) followed with a one-out single and sophomore Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) subbed as a pinch runner. After Viken walked, Grimes hit a grounder to shortstop for a fielder's choice, but Goble continued to run and came all the way from second to score and give Quincy a 4-2 lead.

Junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) and Ley reached in the sixth before Greene struck with a two-out, two-run double that broke the game open and gave the hosts a 6-2 lead.

Sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) came on in relief in the sixth inning and pitched two innings of no-hit ball to earn her first save of the season.

Quirk (5-4) surrendered two runs on four hits in five innings of work. She walked two and struck out two in picking up the win.

Scrum, Ley and Greene all went 2-for-4 as the top three players in the lineup combined to go 6-for-12 with three runs scored and four RBI.

The Lady Hawks will return to the field on Tuesday (March 17) when they travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on Lincoln in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
