Lady Hawks Split In Nonconference Action at Lincoln

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team broke out the big bats on Tuesday (March 17), but Lincoln spoiled a chance for a sweep as the teams split a doubleheader in Jefferson City, Mo. in nonconference action.

The Lady Hawks scored 14 runs on 13 hits in the opener to take a 14-1 win before falling in the nightcap, 5-4, despite a desperate four-run sixth inning rally that came up short.

Quincy (11-9) got on the board in the first inning of Game 1 on a three-run home run by senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca). It was Viken's second home run in as many games.

In the second inning, junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) joined in with her own three-run bomb that opened up a 6-0 Quincy lead. Scrum now has three homers on the year.

QU tacked on five runs in the third, getting an RBI single from freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) before Scrum delivered a two-run single. Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) capped the inning with her team-leading fifth homer of the season – a two-run shot to left field.

In the fourth, junior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) ripped an opposite-field double that scored Viken and gave Quincy a 12-0 lead. Junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) added an RBI single in the inning and Burton's RBI groundout closed the scoring.

The Blue Tigers (2-17) got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to take away the chance of a QU shutout.

Senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) continued her excellent form, allowing no earned runs on two hits in four innings of work. She improved to 5-4 on the season and dropper her ERA to 1.27. Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) made her debut in the circle, working a no-hit fifth inning.

Scrum was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBI and Viken was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Burton went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Game 2 was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Blue Tigers put a couple runners aboard against Griskell. They moved into scoring position on a groundout and came around to score on an RBI single by Macie Kinsey off reliever Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.).

Lincoln added three more runs on six hits in the fifth inning before Armstrong came in and stranded three runners.

Quincy rallied for four runs in the sixth inning. Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) singled and senior Mackenzie Fox (Beardstown, Ill./Heartland College) socked a two-run homer to left to cut the deficit to 5-2.

With two down, Scrum doubled and scored on Viken's base hit. Ley then reached on an error and senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) delivered an RBI single to cut it to 5-4. The rally stalled with runners on second and third on a groundout.

Fox singled with two down in the seventh, but were not able to get the tying run across.

Griskell (0-1) took the defeat, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings. Kinsey (2-2) surrendered four runs on 10 hits in picking up the complete game win.

Fox was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Scrum went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Lady Hawks will resume their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on Saturday (March 21) when they travel to Illinois Springfield (14-5, 3-1 GLVC). First pitch is scheduled for noon.
