QU Falls In 12 Innings, UIS Picks Up Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday (March 21) at Illinois Springfield, losing in 12 innings in the opener, 5-4, before falling in the nightcap, 5-0.

The 12-inning game is the longest for the Lady Hawks since a 12-inning, 3-2 defeat at Rockhurst on April 6, 2014.

The Prairie Stars (18-5, 5-1 GLVC) got on the board first in Game 1, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Jordyn Amos off Quincy starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.).

Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) roped a leadoff home run in the second inning to cut the deficit in half. It was Viken's third home run in a four-game stretch.

In the third inning, senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) led off with a single and scored on a double by senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East).

Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) broke the 2-2 tie with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. She now has four home runs on the season and is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

The Prairie Stars got a run back in the bottom of the fifth and added the tying run in the bottom of the sixth – both runs were unearned against Armstrong as the defense committed an error to extend each inning.

Sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) relieved Armstrong in the sixth and kept the Prairie Stars off the board for five innings, despite allowing seven walks and four hits.

Taylor Bowlby matched Harbison's zeroes with eight relief innings, including the final seven scoreless frames.

In the bottom of the 12th, Rachel Goff singled and went to second on Ashli King's two-out walk. Jordyn Larsen then ripped a 2-2 pitch off Harbison into left for the walk-off single.

Harbison (1-1) took her first loss of the season, picking up five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. She threw 74 of her 131 pitches for strikes. Bowlby earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in eight relief innings. She struck out eight and walked one.

Suellentrop went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Ley was 2-for-3 with two runs. The Prairie Stars stranded 21 runners in the game, while Quincy (11-11, 2-4 GLVC) left 11 runners on.

The Prairie Stars scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2 and the Lady Hawks were not able to get their bats going against Bowlby, who threw 44 pitches in her four-inning start. King's three-run homer was the big blow in the inning.

UIS added another run in the second inning to make it 5-0 against QU sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.), who fell to 5-5 on the season.

Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) relieved Quirk in the second and tossed five shutout innings.

The Lady Hawks had their best chance to score in the seventh as Scrum and Ley led off with consecutive singles, but a groundout and double play ended the game.

The Prairie Stars out-hit the Lady Hawks, 10-4, in the game. Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and junior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) had the other two Quincy hits.

The Lady Hawks will return to action on Sunday (March 22) when they travel to McKendree (7-13, 1-5 GLVC), which dropped both games to Truman State on Saturday.
