Viken's Slam Helps Quincy To Split at McKendree

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team salvaged a 6-5 win in Sunday's (March 22) second game to split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at McKendree. The Bearcats shut out the Lady Hawks in the opener, 2-0.

The Game 2 win snapped Quincy's four-game losing streak. The Lady Hawks are now halfway through a 12-game road trip that continues next weekend at Missouri S&T and Drury.

Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) kick-started the QU offense in the first inning of Game 2 with a solo home run that gave the Lady Hawks their first run of the day. Ley now has a team-leading six home runs on the season.

McKendree (8-14, 3-5 GLVC) knotted the game in the bottom of the first on Erica Johnson's RBI double off QU sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.).

Both teams stayed off the board until McKendree's Hanna Branch delivered an RBI single in the fourth to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Hawks (12-12, 3-5 GLVC) turned that deficit around in the fifth. Sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Taylor Dralle (Camp Point, Ill./Central) scored on an RBI hit by freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood).

The rally continued as junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) singled and Ley drew a one-out walk to load the bases for senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca). Viken then powered a grand slam to give the Lady Hawks a 6-2 lead. Viken now has four home runs in her last seven games.

Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) relieved Harbison in the fifth as Quincy's starter ran into trouble. Griskell got out of the jam, but not before the Bearcats capitalized with two runs in the inning to cut the lead in half, 6-4.

The Lady Hawks had a chance to add some insurance in the seventh, loading the bases with two down, but McKendree reliever Holly Magre struck out Greene to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bearcats recorded three straight hits to start the inning to cut the QU lead down to 6-5. With runners on second and third and no outs, QU head coach Char Obert turned back to Harbison, who got Kelsi Stoszkus to line out before recording back-to-back strikeouts with the winning run at second base.

Harbison (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. She walked three and struck out five. Griskell tossed two innings, surrendering one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Susan Goetze (2-7) took the loss for McKendree.

Viken was 2-for-4 in the game with a grand slam. Burton went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Ley reached base three times and scored two runs.

In the opener, the Lady Hawks could not get their bats going and a defensive miscue in the first inning cost them the only two runs surrendered by starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.).

Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) led off the second inning with a single, but was eliminated on a double play. Stoszkus started the game for the Bearcats and retired the next eight batters before Topps singled again to lead off the fifth.

The Lady Hawks drew two walks in the sixth to chase Stoszkus from the game, but came up empty against Goetze.

Meanwhile, Armstrong pitched very well. She pitched around three hits and one walk over the final five innings and retired the last nine batters she faced. Armstrong (5-5) took the tough-luck loss while lowering her season ERA to 1.26.

Stoszkus (4-1) picked up the win for the hosts and Goetze earned her first save of the season.

The Lady Hawks will return to the field on Saturday (March 28) when they travel to Rolla, Mo. to take on Missouri S&T. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
