QU Offense Struggles Sunday at Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games at Drury on Sunday (March 29) afternoon, 2-0 and 5-2, in Springfield, Mo.

In Game 1, Drury opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a run coming home on a passed ball with the bases loaded off QU starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.).

The Panthers (10-14, 3-7 GLVC) took a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by Chantal Oelrich.

Quincy reliever Tiffany Haribson (Waterloo, Ill.) came on in relief in the third and was lights out against the Panthers. She tossed 3 2/3 hitless innings to give the offense a chance to climb back into the game.

The lineup was not able to do that, however, as Jessica Kjeldgaard (5-6) worked around a two-out single by senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) in the fifth and a one-out single by sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) in the seventh. Kjeldgaard hit one batter with now walks and three strikeouts in the complete game win.

Armstrong (5-6) took the defeat, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Harbison got the start in Game 2, but she was not able to continue her dominance of the home team as Carson Forge powered a two-run homer to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Drury tacked single runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 4-0 before the Lady Hawks (12-14, 3-7 GLVC) got on the scoreboard for the first time with a couple runs in the fifth. Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) led off with a single and scored on an RBI double by senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND). Ley eventually came around on a sacrifice fly by junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) that cut Drury's lead down to 4-2.

The Lady Hawks stranded eight runners in the game, including one in every inning except the fifth, when they put up their two runs.

Drury, which closed the scoring with a run in the sixth, out-hit Quincy, 10-9, in the game.

Harbison (2-2) took the loss for the Lady Hawks, allowing three runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. She walked one and struck out three. Freshmen Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) and Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each allowed a run in relief.

Ley led the offense with three of Quincy's nine hits. Viken went 2-for-4 at the plate and Scrum reached base twice.

The Lady Hawks will look to bounce back on Monday (March 30) when they travel to Missouri S&T (1-16, 0-10 GLVC), which dropped a pair to Truman State on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
