QU Scores 22 Runs in Sweep of Missouri S&T

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team broke out of its slump on Monday (March 30) in a big way, defeating Missouri S&T, 12-3 and 10-2, in a pair of six-inning games in Rolla, Mo.

The Lady Hawks had lost six of their last seven games entering the day, but their offense – which had scored just eight runs over the last five games – plated runs in 10 of the 12 innings played against Missouri S&T. Quincy also hit five home runs on Monday.

Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) went 5-for-8 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored on the day. Junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) slugged two home runs and drove in seven runs.

In Game 1, the Lady Hawks (14-14, 5-7 GLVC) looked as if they might fall behind in the first inning as the Miners (1-18, 0-12 GLVC) loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. QU starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) worked out of the jam with a pop out and a strikeout.

Quincy warmed up the bats in the second inning and kept them hot the rest of the day. Topps led off the inning with a double and scored on a dropped fly ball. Senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) followed with a two-run homer that gave the Lady Hawks a 3-0 lead. It was her second home run of the season.

Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) started the third inning with a walk before Scrum powered a two-run homer to give QU a 5-0 lead.

The Miners got one back in the bottom of the third, but Quincy tacked on two more in the fourth as Suellentrop singled and scored on the Lady Hawks' third two-run home run of the game – this one by freshman Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). It was McLaughlin's first career homer.

Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) replaced Harbison in the fourth and stranded runners at second and third with one out, though the home team scratched out a second run of QU's starter.

The Lady Hawks added three runs in the fifth on RBI hits from sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.), senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) and junior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic).

In the sixth, Viken singled and senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) doubled before Scrum brought both home on a single into left field.

The Miners had chances to score more than the three runs they posted, but Harbison and Griskell weaved in and out of trouble all game. Missouri S&T stranded 14 runners in the six-inning game, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings.

Griskell (1-1) picked up the relief win, allowing one run on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out three. Harbison allowed two runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

Topps was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Scrum was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.

The bats remained hot in the nightcap as the first two batters reached off S&T starter Bethany Rader in the first before Scrum gave the Lady Hawks a 3-0 lead with a home run to left field. She leads the team with 22 RBI and is tied for the team lead with six homers.

In the second, Viken delivered an RBI single and Ley followed with a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Miners got on the board with a run in the third inning, but Quincy answered in the fourth as McLaughlin singled and pinch runner Taylor Dralle (Camp Point, Ill./Central) scored on Viken's double.

Topps and Greene knocked back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning to give Quincy a 7-2 lead. Topps put an exclamation point on the day with a three-run homer to center field that plated Scrum and Ley in the sixth.

Senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) was effective in a complete game effort, allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. She improved to 6-6 on the season with a 1.48 ERA and nine complete games in 13 starts.

Viken was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Topps, Greene and McLaughlin had two hits apiece. Scrum and Topps each drove in three runs.

The Lady Hawks will return to the field on Friday (April 3) when they take on Maryville at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. First pitch is set for noon.
