Timely Hits Don't Come For QU in Maryville Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team could not come up with timely hits on Friday (April 3) as the Lady Hawks dropped a pair of games, 2-0 and 5-3, to visiting Maryville in GLVC action at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

The Lady Hawks (14-16, 5-9 GLVC) hit just 2-for-15 (.133) with runners in scoring position in the doubleheader and the Saints (9-20, 6-10 GLVC) scratched out just enough offensively to get the wins.

In Game 1, Quincy had four hits – including three doubles – off Maryville starter Wendy Macias, but the offense could not cash in.

In the first inning, senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) rapped a one-out single, followed by a double by junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin), but Ley was thrown out going to third base. The rally ended on a groundout.

Macias helped her own cause with a leadoff homer in the second to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Sheridon Sprague's RBI single in the third gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Seniors Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) and Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) doubled in the third and fourth innings, but both were stranded. An error and walk put two on with one out in the sixth, but Macias retired the next two batters to keep QU off the board.

Meanwhile, Quincy starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) was solid in a complete game effort. She allowed just two runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Harbison (2-3) made 126 pitches.

Macias (6-8) earned the win and her fourth shutout of the season. She walked two and struck out two.

In Game 2, Maryville got on the board in the top of the third on Krystal Rock's RBI single that scored Brittany Casini to give MU a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Hawks responded in the bottom half as freshman Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) and Viken delivered back-to-back one out singles before Ley lifted a 1-0 pitched over the wall in left-center to give the home team a 3-1 lead. Ley now leads the Lady Hawks with seven homers on the season.

The Saints started the fifth inning with consecutive singles before Ashley Marks hit a ball that Viken couldn't handle at shortstop and caromed down the left field line allowing two runs to score, tying the game at 3-3.

Darby Ferguson's RBI single in the sixth gave the Saints a 4-3 lead before they cashed in an unearned run in the seventh to make it a two-run game.

Ley drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, but two groundouts and a fly out ended the game.

Senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) was saddled with the loss (6-7), allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits in a complete game. She walked one and struck out one.

Sprague (2-4) picked up the win in relief, tossing 3 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball. Maryville starter Nicole Taylor got the no-decision, allowing three runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Burton and Topps had two hits each for the Lady Hawks, who out-hit the Saints, 10-7.

The Lady Hawks return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex on Saturday (April 4) at noon when they take on No. 3 Missouri-St. Louis.
