The Sticks Give Hawks a Split with Trevecca

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 21 Quincy University baseball team earned a split with Trevecca Nazarene University in Sunday's (Mar. 8) doubleheader.  TNU scored 10 runs in the sixth through eighth inning against QU in game one.  The Hawks scored six runs in the top of the ninth, but fell 15-9 in the first half of the doubleheader.  QU got on the board early in game two with four runs in the first.  They chipped in four more runs in the seven inning game to win 8-4 in the back half off the doubleheader.  

The Hawks (3-2) took the lead in the first game when Brynn Martinez singled to right field to bring home JP Meyer and Justin Blechle in the second inning.

The Trojans (6-7) scored a run in the second and third to tie the game.

Brynn Martinez responded with an RBI double to left field to score JP Meyer in the fourth inning giving QU a 3-2 lead.

The next half inning, the Trojans scored three runs off of Jake Peterson.  Peterson threw four innings allowing five earned runs on six hits and four walks in his first loss of the season.  

The Trojans went on to score three runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh, and six in the eighth to take a 15-3 lead.

The Hawks scored six in the top of the ninth.  Peter Cunningham hit a two-run homerun to score Ryan Snyder.  Later, Kory Wisdom singled to bring home Brynn Martinez.  David Jacob homered to score Wisdom.  Dominic Miles later tripled to center to score Tommy Hager.

Austin Sisk earned the win for the Trojans throwing the last five innings of the game and allowing six runs on six hits and one walk.

Brynn Martinez went three for four with three RBI and a stolen base.  David Jacob and Peter Cunningham both went yard and brought in two RBI.

In game two, the Hawk offense picked up where it left off.  With two outs, David Jacob doubled to center.  Tommy Hager reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Jacob.  Hager advanced to second.  Dominic Miles reached on an error by the shortstop that scored Hager.  Then, Zach Knese doubled to right center to bring home Miles.  After Justin Blechle was hit by a pitch, Peter Cunningham singled to center to score Knese.  

The Hawks gave Braden Shull a 4-0 lead before he ever stepped foot on the mound for his first collegiate inning.  Shull tossed an inning and a third allowing four runs on three hits and four walks.  Trevecca scored two runs on wild pitches in the first inning.  

Kory Wisdom was hit by a pitch in the second inning with one out.  David Jacob reached on an error by the right fielder that sent Wisdom to second.  Tommy Hager reached on an error by the first baseman scoring Wisdom.  Jacob was thrown out at third base by the right fielder on the play.  Dominic Miles hit another triple, this one to right center, to score Hager from first.  The Hawks led 6-2 after one and a half innings.

A walk and a couple singles loaded the bases for the Trojans in the bottom half.  A sacrifice fly made it 6-3.  The next batter singled to bring in a run making it 6-4 in favor of the Hawks.  After a walk to load the bases again, Mark Niebrugge came in and go a strikeout and a groundout to escape the inning without further damage.

Mark Niebrugge threw three and two-thirds scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.  Niebrugge went on to pick up his second win of the season.

Tommy Hager added some insurance for the Hawks with a solo blast over the right field wall to lead off the top of the fourth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Gordon Gundaker doubled to left field to score Peter Cunningham giving the Hawks an 8-4 lead.

Cole Crawford and and Teddy Rule each pitched an inning to close out the game for the Hawks with an 8-4 win.

The Hawks will play one more game in Nashville, Tenn. tomorrow (Mar. 9).  QU will play the University of Indianapolis in a nonconference game starting at 1:00 p.m.
