Quincy Wins Three of First Four in Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team played four games in a 20-hour span on Friday and Saturday (March 6-7) at the National Training Center College Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. and came away with three victories to even their record at 4-4 on the season.

Following are brief recaps from each game.
 
Friday, March 6 (Game 1) – Quincy 10, Ferris State 3
 
The Hawks played their first game since Valentine's Day and the bats got rolling early and pounded out 15 hits in the game. After surrendering an unearned run in the top of the first, the Hawks tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Senior shortstop Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) and junior first baseman Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) recorded back-to-back singles before senior designated player Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) grounded out to score Viken.
 
The Bulldogs (1-11) took a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but Quincy responded with four in the third inning. Senior second baseman Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) delivered a three-run double before sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) ripped an RBI single.
 
QU added three more in the fourth, including Scrum's RBI double, an RBI single by senior outfielder Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and Greene's RBI single. The Hawks got an RBI double by Topps in the fifth before adding another run in the sixth on an error by the Bulldogs.
 
Senior starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) picked up her first win of the season, retiring 15 of the last 18 batters she faced. She recorded four strikeouts in the complete game effort.
 
Greene led the Hawks with four hits, while Viken went 2-for-3 and reached base four times. Scrum and Topps had three hits apiece.
 
Friday, March 6 (Game 2) – Quincy 6, #RV Grand Valley State 2
 
The Hawks played Grand Valley State in the nightcap on Friday and handed the Lakers just their third loss in 15 games this season.
 
Freshman Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) upped her record to 2-1 with a five-hitter.
 
Junior third baseman Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) hit a two-out solo homer in the first to open the scoring. The Lakers (12-3) evened the score in the second inning on a passed ball.
 
GVSU scored on another unearned run in the fourth inning before the Hawks bounced back to take a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Ledbetter tied the game with an RBI double. Greene's run-scoring single gave Quincy a lead before senior right fielder Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) ripped a two-run double to stretch it to a three-run lead. Topps' RBI single in the sixth gave the Hawks an insurance run.
 
Quirk pitched around six walks and did not allow an earned run. She struck out two in a complete game.
 
Ledbetter finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs as the only QU player with two hits. Quincy out-hit GVSU, 8-5.
 
Saturday, March 7 (Game 1) – Quincy 9, Cedarville 1 (5 innings)
 
The Hawks out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 10-2, in a five-inning route in Saturday morning's opener in Clermont, Fla.
 
Cedarville (6-8) opened the scoring in the second inning on a double-steal attempt that ended the inning, but allowed the Jackets their only run off sophomore starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.).
 
Scrum gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run single that plated Suellentrop and freshman left fielder Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill/Glenwood). Ledbetter followed that up with a two-run home run to stretch the lead to 4-1.
 
Viken tacked on a two-run double, followed by a two-run blast by Scrum to give the Hawks an 8-1 advantage in the fourth. Ley gave the Hawks their eight-run edge in the fifth with a leadoff home run.
 
Harbison was effective in four innings, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Quirk worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning to close out the game.
 
Scrum was 3-for-4 with four RBI while Viken and Ledbetter added two RBI apiece. Scrum, Suellentrop and Burton scored two runs each.
 
Saturday, March 7 (Game 2) – Ashland 5, Quincy 2
 
In Saturday's nightcap, it looked as though the Hawks might finish their opening four-game stretch in Florida with a fourth straight win, but the Eagles scored five unanswered runs for the victory.
 
Quirk cruised through the first four innings, allowing just a pair of singles. Quincy got on the board in the second on a Greene's RBI double. In the fourth, Grimes made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single. Topps, who reached base three times in the game, scored both of QU's runs.
 
Ashland (11-1) got on the board in the fifth with three straight RBI hits, the last a single by Jen Moore that gave AU a 3-2 lead. Quincy committed three errors in the seventh inning as the Eagles added two insurance runs.
 
Brittany Flanigan picked up the win for Ashland, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks. She struck out four. Quirk (2-2) took the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits in five innings. Greene and Topps each reached base three times in the game.
 
The Hawks return to the field on Sunday (March 8) when they play Wilmington (1 p.m.) and Hillsdale (5 p.m.).
