Hawks Strong at Net in 3-1 Win Over HLGU

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team was strong at the net on Thursday (March 5) night at Pepsi Arena and used that to take a 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19) decision over Hannibal-LaGrange in nonconference action.

The Hawks (10-8) racked up 12 blocks – one shy of a season high – in the win. Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) led the Hawks in that category with seven stuffs, including one solo block. He also put down eight kills (.250) on 16 attacks.

The back row was also excellent for the home team as QU held the Trojans (6-16) to a .101 hitting percentage. Freshman libero Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led QU with 10 digs.

Quincy hit .298 as a team, including a .409 mark in Set 1. The Hawks fell behind early, 5-1, but used a 6-0 run with Kelso serving to turn a two-point deficit into a 16-12 lead. Quincy finished the frame by scoring the last five points, including two kills, two blocks and an ace. A kill by redshirt-junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) gave the Hawks the victory.

In Set 2, the Hawks again needed to climb out of an early 4-1 hole. They tied the set at 7-7 on a kill by junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), and then went on a 9-2 run to take a 17-12 lead, capping the run with a double block by Gamache and Kelso. An attack error by the Trojans gave the Hawks a 25-17 win.

HLGU controlled the middle portion of Set 3, turning an 11-10 lead into a 19-12 advantage with an 8-1 run that the Hawks were not able to counter. The Trojans hit .296 in the frame, the only time they were able to turn in a mark better than .100 in the match.

The Hawks trailed briefly in Set 4, 7-6, but scored the next six points with Kelso serving to take command, 12-7. HLGU cut the deficit to as little as two points, but the Hawks withstood the tide and came away with the 25-19 win.

Junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) led the Hawks with 12 kills (.333) on 21 swings. Rogan finished with nine kills (.500) and Gamache added eight (.400). Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed out 45 assists and had three kills and five blocks.

The Hawks out-killed the Trojans, 53-34, in the match. Joao Sales Neto led Hannibal-LaGrange with 11 kills (.194) while Felipe Oliveira added 10 (.037).

The Hawks will now have more than two weeks off before returning to MIVA play on March 20 when they play host to IPFW at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
