IPFW Takes Final Two Sets For 3-1 Win Over Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team had its match against IPFW evened up at one set apiece, but the Mastodons closed out the final two sets for a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21) win over the Hawks in MIVA action at Pepsi Arena Friday (March 20) night.

The teams were even on total points in the match, 61-61, and the Hawks racked up more kills, 48-44, but Quincy (10-9, 3-7 MIVA) committed 18 service errors and 30 hitting errors in the match.

For just the second time this season, the Hawks kept a conference opponent under .200 hitting for the match, limiting the Mastodons (15-7, 5-4 MIVA) to a .174 mark. The Hawks hit .140.

The Hawks trailed in Set 1, 18-14, before scoring four in a row with senior Terence Veile (Fairfield, Wash./Liberty) on the serve. Quincy briefly took a 21-20 lead after a kill by senior John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.), but the 'Dons scored five of the last six points of the set for the win.

The Hawks led by as many as five points in Set 2, getting three straight points on the serve of junior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) to give Quincy a 19-14 edge. The Mastodons eventually would tie the set at 23-23, but the visitors committed a blocking error before sophomore Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and Gamache combined on a block to give the Hawks a 25-23 win.

QU led the third set 7-5, but the Mastodons used an 8-2 run to turn a 16-14 lead into a 24-16 advantage. The Hawks held IPFW at set point, reeling off five straight points with senior Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) serving, but a service error gave the 'Dons the 2-1 set lead.

Set 4 featured nine tie scores as the teams exchanged several sideouts before IPFW took a 20-15 lead on an 8-3 run. The Hawks rallied to cut the deficit down to one, 21-20 on a block by Kelso. Cavanaugh put down a kill after an IPFW sideout, but the Mastodons scored three straight for the victory.

Pranger and junior Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) each matched their career highs with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, to lead the QU attack.
