Hawks Claim Wild Five-Set Thriller Over No. 14 Ball State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team pulled out an epic 3-2 (29-27, 25-18, 35-37, 28-30, 15-9) win over No. 14 Ball State in MIVA play Saturday (March 21) night at Pepsi Arena.
 
The win marks the Hawks' first over a ranked team since they upset No. 10 Ohio State, 3-1, on March 23, 2012. It is also Quincy's first win over Ball State since in a 3-1 win in the first round of the MIVA Tournament on April 23, 2011.
 
The match featured several lengthy rallies and long sets, especially the third frame, which the Cardinals (12-11, 5-6 MIVA) won, 37-35.
 
The Hawks (11-9, 4-7 MIVA) had set point in the opening frame at 24-22, but the Cardinals scored the next two points to tie it at 24-24. The teams then exchanged sideouts with the Hawks fending off two set points. Ball State then missed on two straight attacks before junior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) put it away with a kill. Junior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) had seven kills in the first set.
 
The Hawks dominated Set 2, hitting .350 and recording sideouts on 73 percent (14-for-19) of Ball State's serves. Lawson was 3-for-4 with no errors to go with back-to-back aces and a block in Set 2. Senior Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) finished the game with an ace.
 
Set 3 was wild. It featured 24 tie scores and 10 lead changes. The Hawks warded off seven set points, while the visitors fended off five. The Hawks actually led the set, 21-16, and eventually had a chance to win, leading 35-34. Ball State then put down two kills before a Quincy hitting error extended the match. Gamache totaled seven kills on 11 swings in the set.
 
In Set 4, the Hawks again had chances to win. They took away three set points before taking a 27-26 lead on a block by sophomore Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). Lawson put down a kill to give QU a 28-27 lead after Ball State posted a block that tied it. The Cardinals, though, closed the set with three straight points to take the match to a fifth set.
 
Quincy was dominant in the decisive game. The Hawks hit .467 with nine kills and two errors on 15 swings. Ball State had an early 2-1 lead, but the Hawks scored the next three points to take a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish. Leading 9-7, senior serve specialist Terence Veile (Fairfield, Wash./Liberty) got on a roll behind the line, reeling off four straight points to stretch the lead to 13-7. Gamache finally put the match away with an ace – his third and the Hawks' sixth of the match.
 
Gamache posted a double-double with a team-leading 15 kills (.257) to go with 14 digs. Kelso had 14 kills (.296) and five blocks, while Lawson added 14 kills (.105), three blocks and two aces.
 
Senior John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) had nine kills (.500), five blocks and four digs. Cavanaugh put down six kills (.176) in the match. Fanfulik dished out 51 assists and had six kills and five digs.
 
Edgardo Cartagena paced the five Cardinals in double figures with 15 kills (.118). The Hawks out-hit Ball State, .208 to .203, while the visitors had the edge in blocks, 16-12.
 
The Hawks will return to action on Friday (March 27) when they play host to nonconference opponent Clarke at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
