Hawks Pull Away For 3-1 Win Over NAIA #4 Clarke

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team used a long run in Set 4 to pull away from NAIA No. 4 Clarke for a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13) win in nonconference action at Pepsi Arena on Friday (March 27) night.
 
The Hawks (12-9) exacted a measure of revenge against the Crusaders (27-6) after losing to them in four sets on Jan. 20 in Dubuque, Iowa. Quincy improved to 8-2 in nonconference play on the season.
 
The teams played three straight close sets to open the match. The first three games featured a combined 37 tie scores and 11 lead changes.
 
In Set 1 neither team led by more than two points. Quincy trailed 22-21 before reeling off three straight points. Junior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell  Central) closed the set with a kill. The Hawks hit .517 in the opening frame, while the Crusaders hit .467. Junior Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) totaled seven kills with no errors in the first set.
 
Set 2 was a much more defensive battle as neither team hit better than .140, but the Hawks still came out on top, 25-21. The Crusaders led by as many as four in the set, but Quincy used a 7-2 run to take a 19-18 lead. The teams were tied at 21-21 before Rogan scored four straight on the serve, including an ace to give the Hawks the win.
 
QU could not get on track offensively in Set 3, hitting .025 in the stanza with 11 kills and 10 errors. Meanwhile, the Crusaders clicked at a .265 rate with Tyler Wills picking up five kills.
 
The Hawks were outstanding in all facets of the game in Set 4, hitting .737 (15 kills, one error, 19 attacks) as they passed well out of the back row and sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) spread the ball around. QU held Clarke to a .062 performance and also had four service aces. Rogan and sophomore Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had four kills each with junior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) picking up three. Quincy led 9-6 in the set before exploding for a 10-1 run with Gamache and Rogan on the serve.
 
Rogan finished with a career-high 17 kills (.282) to go with three service aces and five digs. Kelso had 14 kills (.444) and senior John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) added nine kills (.727) and a match-high six blocks. Fanfulik dished out 50 assists. Gamache had seven kills and 11 digs and freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a match-high 18 digs.
 
Wills led the Crusaders with 15 kills (.324) after picking up 22 in the teams' January matchup. The Hawks out-hit Clarke, .275 to .229. Both teams had eight blocks.
 
The Hawks will return to the court on Monday (March 30) when they travel to NAIA No. 3 Missouri Baptist for a 7 p.m. first serve. It will be the Hawks' final road match before they close the regular season with five straight MIVA matches at Pepsi Arena.
