Hawks Take NAIA #3 Spartans To Five Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell to NAIA No. 3 Missouri Baptist in five sets, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14, in the Hawks' final nonconference match and final regular season road contest on Monday (March 30).
 
The Hawks (12-10) will now return to Pepsi Arena for their final five matches – all against Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foes.
 
Junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) posted a double-double with 12 kills (.280) and 12 digs to go with five blocks and three aces. Junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 12 kills (.114) and six digs.
 
The Hawks opened the match with seven straight points and went on to a 25-15 win in Set 1. Quincy hit .353 in the opening frame, getting five kills on eight swings from Rogan and four kills on four attacks by sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby).
 
The Hawks still out-hit the Spartans (23-7) on the aggregate in Sets 2 and 3, but the home team came out with wins in both. In Set 4, Missouri Baptist held the Hawks to a .000 hitting percentage and the Spartans hit .303, but the Hawks stole a 25-22 win to take the match to a decisive fifth set.
 
In the final stanza, the Hawks trailed, 7-4, before taking an 8-7 lead. The Spartans then scored the next three points to take a 10-8 lead. MBU had match point at 14-13, but the Hawks fought it off to tie it at 14-14. Missouri Baptist scored the final two points, including the last one on a service ace to seal the victory.
 
The Spartains held a 10-9 edge in service aces and a slight advantage in blocks, 12.5 to 12. Quincy out-hit Missouri Baptist, .217 to .199.
 
Kelso was the third QU player in double figures with 10 kills (.261) to go with six blocks. Junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) added nine kills. Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 39 assists and had nine digs.
 
Chris Flood paced the Spartans with 20 kills (.173), while Mico Janicijevic totaled 19 kills (.256).
 
The Hawks will return to action on Thursday (April 2) when they take on McKendree at Pepsi Arena at 7 p.m.
