Balanced Attack Lifts Hawks To MIVA Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack and strong service to sweep MIVA rival McKendree in three sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20, at Pepsi Arena on Thursday (April 2) night.

The Hawks (13-10, 5-7 MIVA) won their fifth MIVA match of the season – the first time they have hit that mark since going 7-9 in 2003. QU sits in sixth place, just one match behind IPFW and Lindenwood for fourth in the conference standings. The top four teams will host a first round MIVA Tournament match.

On Thursday, the Hawks were rolling offensively against McKendree (11-16, 1-12 MIVA), which was coming off a five-set defeat at Lindenwood on Wednesday.

The Hawks compiled a .452 hitting percentage – their highest since a .467 output against King on Jan. 14, 2012. Quincy dominated the match from start to finish, holding the Bearcats to a .075 hitting percentage. The Hawks committed just nine hitting errors and nearly doubled the visitors in kills, 42-22.

In Set 1, the Hawks trailed 12-11 before reeling off six straight points on the service of sophomore Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), who ran off several serving runs in the match. Sophomore Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) scored Quincy's final four points with kills to give the host a 25-18 win. The Hawks committed just three errors in the opening frame and Kelso was 6-for-6.

The Hawks went on just one run of three points in Set 2, but hit .500 in the stanza for a 25-20 win. The Hawks turned a 9-9 tie into a 13-10 lead with a 4-1 run in the middle of the set and Wyatt Patterson's error for McKendree gave Quincy the win. Patterson came into the match leading the MIVA in hitting percentage (.475), but the Hawks limited him to a .333 mark.

Set 3 was the same story with the Hawks taking a lead and maintaining it throughout as senior John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) put down five of his seven kills in the third set.

Kelso led the Hawks with nine kills (.615), leading six players with at least five kills. Junior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had eight kills (.467). Pranger (.875) and junior Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) had seven kills each. Junior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) put down five kills (.300).

Fanfulik was excellent for the Hawks, dishing out 31 assists to go with six digs and five kills (.333). Freshman Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a great night passing with five digs and no reception errors. The Hawks led in blocks, 7-3, and aces, 4-2.

Patterson led the Bearcats with seven kills while Nolan Rueter added six (.273).

The Hawks return to action on Saturday (April 4) when they take on No. 11 Ohio State at Pepsi Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
