SEASON PREVIEW: Hawks Open with Two Wins in Jackson

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 21 Quincy University baseball team got their season underway last weekend in Jackson, Miss. against Saint Joseph's College on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 28 - Mar. 1).  QU and SJC played at Millsaps College where they found weather suitable for baseball in early Spring.  The Hawks dropped the first game, 5-2, before coming back to win the second game, 5-4.  On Sunday, QU won the rain shortened first contest 9-3.  The second game was canceled due to weather.

Jake Peterson tossed six innings for the Hawks (2-1) in his first outing of the season.  Peterson allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks.  The lefty hurled six strikeouts in a no-decision.

Quincy did all of their scoring in the second inning.  Justin Blechle tripled to lead off the inning.  Ryan Snyder grounded out to third to score Blechle.  With two outs in the inning, Peter Cunningham connected on a homerun to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

The Pumas (1-2) tied it up in the fifth on a Riley Benner single.

In the top of the ninth with two runners on, Matt Skrzypiec hit a three-run homer to lift the Pumas to a 5-2 advantage.  The Hawks went down in order in the bottom half of the frame to fall 5-2.

Graham Spraker got the nod in the second game for the Hawks.  Spraker threw four and two-thirds innings allowing one run in the first and another in the second inning.  Spraker had four strikeouts on five hits and three walks.

The Hawks got one back in the bottom of the second when JP Meyer doubled to bring home Dominic Miles from first base.

In the bottom of the fifth, Gordon Gundaker singled to lead off the inning.  Brynn Martinez singled on a bunt to advance Gundaker to second.  Kory Wisdom laid down another bunt and wound up safe at first base with another single.  After Wisdom crossed the bag, the SJC pitcher launched the ball over the first baseman and into the outfield.  Gundaker came around to score and the other two runners were at second and third.  Two at bats later, David Jacob hammered a three-run bomb to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.

The Pumas loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with Teddy Rule on the mound and two outs.  Jacob Bigos singled to score two runs.  The runner from first came winding around third base looking to score.  Dominic Miles got the ball in to Brynn Martinez who fired a dart to Gordon Gundaker at home to throw out the tying run at the plate and win the game 5-4.

Jake Wehde picked up the win for the Hawks tossing one inning of scoreless baseball in the sixth.  Teddy Rule earned the save.

The Hawks went down 1-0 heading into the top of the second inning of game three when the offense exploded again.  Dominic Miles led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Justin Blechle.  JP Meyer grounded out to score Miles and move Blechle to second.  Ryan Snyder grounded out to move Blechle to third.  Cunningham connected on a single to score Blechle.  Brynn Martinez singled and Kory Wisdom walked to load the bases for David Jacob.  With the table set, David Jacob cleared the bases with a three-run double giving the Hawks a 5-1 lead.

The Hawks led 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning and again loaded the bases with a single by Brynn Martinez and back-to-back walks.  Dominic Miles walked to score one run.  Justin Blechle doubled to clear the bases, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple on a relay from the right fielder cutoff by the second baseman and sent to third.

The Pumas scored one more run to make the score 9-3.

In the top of the seventh Matt Hilmes tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch.  After a walk, the game was called due to rain.  The game reverted back to the sixth inning where the Hawks won 9-3.

Jason O'Brien got the start for the Hawks in the third game.  O'Brien threw two innings allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.  Mark Niebrugge earned the win throwing three and a third innings.  Niebrugge allowed one run on three hits and four walks.

The Hawks will be on the move again this weekend.  With snow on Wednesday in Evansville, Ind. the Hawks games against Indianapolis and No. 2 Southern Indiana are in question.  We will provide updates when there is a set time and date for these games.
