Quincy Sweeps Rockhurst to Extend GLVC West Lead

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Rockhurst University with a pair of wins on Sunday.  QU won the first game 9-2 for Mark Niebrugge's fifth win of the season and came from behind to win game two 6-4 with six runs in the final four innings.  David Jacob was five for eight with five RBI, a double, and a homerun on Sunday.

The QU Hawks (15-6, 11-1 GLVC) started the scoring in the second inning of game one.  David Jacob singled to left and was moved up to second on a single to right by Ryan Snyder.  Tommy Hager doubled down the right field line to score Jacob and Snyder give QU a 2-0 lead.

Brynn Martinez singled and Dominic Miles reached on an error by the second baseman to bring David Jacob up.  Jacob blasted his fifth homerun of the season to right center giving QU a 5-0 lead.

Rockhurst (11-13, 4-8 GLVC) scratched across runs in the third and fourth inning to trail 5-2.

QU had a big inning in the fifth starting with a one-out walk by David Jacob.  Ryan Snyder was hit by a pitch and Tommy Hager singled to score Jacob.  Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Justin Blechle singled and the RU first baseman threw the ball away to clear the bases giving QU a 9-2 lead.

Mark Niebrugge (W, 5-0) tossed six innings allowing two earned runs on nine hits and four walks.  Evan Cahn came in for the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning to finish off the win for QU.

David Jacob was three for three with three runs and three RBI.  Tommy Hager was two for four with a run scored and three RBI.  Justin Blechle was one for four with two RBI.

Brandon Ley started game two for the Hawks throwing six innings allowing three runs with two earned on six hits and two walks.  

Rockhurst took the lead on a single by Matt Stacks to bring home Calin McCourt in the first inning.  They added another run in the third inning when Caleb Baker singled to score Patrick Burns.

David Jacob doubled to score Brynn Martinez and Justin Blechle in the sixth inning with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.

Rockhurst regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice to take a 3-2 lead.  

After a Tommy Hager single in the seventh, JP Meyer tripled to score Hager.  Gordon Gundaker scored Meyer on a sacrifice fly to give QU a 4-3 lead.  

Matt Stacks singled in the bottom of the seventh to score Patrick Burns to tie the game again.

Dominic Miles scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to give QU a 5-4 lead.

Matt Norton allowed one single in the bottom of the eighth, but held Rockhurst scoreless.

Gordon Gundaker scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a passed ball to give QU a two run lead.

Teddy Rule (S, 5) earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth to finish the weekend sweep.

Jake Wehde (W, 4-0) earned the win allowing one earned run on two hits in one inning of work.  

The Hawks improved to 11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to hold sole possession of first place in the GLVC West Division.

The QU Hawks travel to Kirksville, Mo. for a midweek GLVC matchup with Truman State University on Wednesday, Apr. 1.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
