Quincy Keeps Rolling at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball offense led to a couple come from behind victories on Saturday (Mar. 28) at Rockhurst University.  QU took the first game 9-8 and won the second game in extra innings 6-5.  Tommy Hager had four RBI with a homerun and a win on the mound in the doubleheader.  The Hawks outhit Rockhurst 26 to 20 during the first day.

Quincy (13-6, 9-1 GLVC) exploded on offense in the third inning of game one.  Gordon Gundaker singled through the left side to start the inning.  Justin Blechle doubled to bring Gundaker to third.  Brynn Martinez traded places with a double to left bringing Gundaker home and Blechle to third.  Kory Wisdom singled to bring home Blechle and advance Martinez to third. 

After an out, David Jacob singled to bring home Wisdom.  JP Meyer singled to score Jacob and Miles.  Tommy Hager singled to left to score Ryan Snyder for the sixth run of the inning.

Rockhurst (11-11, 4-6 GLVC) brought home four runs in the bottom half of the third. 

David Jacob flied out to center in the fifth to score Brynn Martinez on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Rockhurst countered with another four run inning in the fourth to take an 8-7 lead.

The Hawks answered in the fifth inning when Brynn Martinez singled to left center to score Justin Blechle to tie the game at 8-8.

QU took the lead back in the eighth inning.  Justin Blechle started with a single to right.  Blechle stole second base to move into scoring position.  Brynn Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt and the Rockhurst pitcher threw the ball away allowing Blechle to score giving QU a 9-8 lead.

Tommy Hager and Teddy Rule closed out Rockhurst to win the game.  Rule (S, 4) struck out one in a perfect ninth inning.  Jake Wehde (W, 3-0) earned his third win with three innings of scoreless baseball allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.  

The Hawks had 14 hits in game one.  Brynn Martinez was three for four with one run and two RBI.  Kory Wisdom was three for five with a run and an RBI.  David Jacob was two for four with a run and two RBI.  JP Meyer was two for five with two RBI.

In game two, Rockhurst took the lead in the first inning with an RBI single to take the lead.

Tommy Hager homered to right center in the second inning to tie the game 1-1.

David Jacob singled up the middle to score Kory Wisdom in the third inning to take the lead.

Tommy Hager doubled to left to bring home Ryan Snyder and David Jacob to give QU a 4-1 lead.

Rockhurst answered with two runs in the sixth inning to pull within one run at 4-3.

Rockhurst tied the game with a single in the seventh inning to force extras.

David Jacob singled to left and Ryan Snyder tripled to right to score Jacob.  JP Meyer singled to score Snyder to give QU a 6-4 lead.

Rockhurst scored one in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Jake Wehde (S, 1) was able to close out the game to give the Hawks a 6-5 win.

Tommy Hager (W, 1-0) earned the win, but allowed one earned run in the seventh inning.

Hager was two for four with three RBI and a homerun.  

QU and Rockhurst will play another doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 29) starting at noon in Kansas City, Mo.
