Hawks Slip in Extras to Bearcats

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team went down early against Northwest Missouri State University, but tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday (Mar. 25) night.  QU and NWMSU headed to extra innings and the Hawks had a couple of opportunities to win the game, but the light drizzle that increased throughout the night led to a slippery turf which stalled the Hawks.  The Bearcats went on to win the game in the 13th inning, 4-3, after being held without a run since the second inning.

The Bearcats (13-13) started the game off with a walk.  Nick Gotta advanced to second base on a wild pitch and Derek Meyer singled to give Paul Johnson a no-out opportunity with runners on the corners.  Johnson grounded into a double play started by Kory Wisdom, but Gotta scored to give the Bearcats a one run lead.

Daniel Schnicker started the game for the Hawks (11-6) and went six innings allowing three runs, but only one earned run.  Schnicker scattered four hits and allowed four walks.

The Bearcats would score again in the second inning.  Kolby Greenslade found his way on base after an error by David Jacob.  Later, with two outs Austin Wulff singled up the middle to score Greenslade and Blake Hardegree to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks got their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zach Knese led off the inning with a solo blast over the right field wall.

Schnicker settled in and the Quincy bullpen shutdown the Bearcats for much of the game.  Brandon Ley tossed a scoreless seventh with a strikeout followed Jake Wehde who allowed one hit, one walk, and no runs in the eighth.  Teddy Rule came on for the ninth inning and got three straight strikeouts.  Tommy Hager tossed two innings of scoreless baseball allowing one walk.

The Hawks struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning.  when Brynn Martinez singled to the third baseman and his speed became a factor when a hurried throw was spiked into the turf and went down the right field line.  Martinez ended up on third base and Kory Wisdom singled to left field to bring him home.  David Jacob walked and Ryan Snyder laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Wisdom and Jacob up a base.  A wild pitch would score Wisdom from third to tie the game 3-3.

In the tenth inning, Brynn Martinez led off and lined a long drive off the top of the right field wall.  Martinez slid head first into third base, but the wet turf made him slip past the bag and he was tagged out on his ankle before he could get back to the bag.  Martinez was a few feet away from a walk off homerun.

With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Kory Wisdom singled to left field.  David Jacob struck out for a fourth time on Wednesday night, but reached base on a dropped third strike for the third time.  The ball skirted to the backstop and Wisdom went to third.  The catcher fired the ball over the third baseman's head and Wisdom rounded to score, but slipped on the wet turf.  The left fielder backed up the throw and Wisdom scrambled back to the bag to place runners on second and third with two outs.  The Hawks could not capitalize on the opportunity.

In the top of the 13th, Aaron Barratt walked with one out.  Paul Johnson hit a hard grounder for a single that was kept in by Brynn Martinez at short to keep Barratt at second.  Steven Garber hit a grounder down the third baseline that hit the back edge of the bag for a double to score Barratt.

The Hawks could not piece together a run in the bottom half of the inning and the extra inning game ended 4-3 in favor of the Bearcats.

Matt Norton (L, 0-2) threw two innings for the Hawks allowing one run with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Hawks travel to Rockhurst University this weekend (Mar. 28-29) for a pair of doubleheaders in Kansas City, Mo.  First pitch for both days is scheduled for noon.
