Quincy Pitching Shuts Down Knights for Two Wins

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team leaned on the solid pitching performances of Jake Peterson and Graham Spraker to earn a pair of wins against Bellarmine University in the QU home opener at the newly renovated QU Stadium on Saturday (Mar. 21).  QU's top two starters combined for just two earned runs in 14 innings pitched.  Spraker tossed his second consecutive complete game in the 2-1 second game win.  Peterson, Tommy Hager, and Teddy Rule combined to allow one run in nine innings in the 4-1 first game win.  Teddy Rule earned his third save of the season.

5173Kory Wisdom stayed hot for the Hawks (9-5, 5-1 GLVC) in the doubleheader extending his hitting streak to 11 games and his on-base streak to all 14 games this season.  Wisdom singled to left center with one out in the first inning of game one to get the rally started.  Dominic Miles singled up the middle and David Jacob followed with a single to load the bases with one out.  Ryan Snyder laced a two RBI double down the left field line that scored Wisdom and Miles.

The Hawks struck again in the third and it all started with Wisdom's walk.  After a wild pitch and a ground ball advanced Wisdom to third, David Jacob singled on a laser of a shot to right field that brought home Wisdom.

Austin Crutcher led off the fourth inning with a double to right field for BU (9-7, 3-3 GLVC).  Crutcher stole third and Cole Metcalfe flied out to right field to score Crutcher on the sacrifice fly.

The Hawks added one more run in the seventh inning when Blechle was hit by a pitch with two outs.  He stole second base after being picked off of first.  Brynn Martinez made the Knights pay for their mistake with a single up the middle to score Blechle to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.

Jake Peterson (W, 1-2) earned the win for the Hawks throwing seven-plus innings allowing one earned run on five hits, a walk, and two hit batters.  Peterson struck out four.  Tommy Hager pitched a scoreless eighth inning allowing one hit.  Teddy Rule (S, 3) threw a perfect ninth inning getting a strikeout and two foul outs to secure the save and the win.

The Hawks struck in the first inning again in game two.  Kory Wisdom singled up the middle with one out and Dominic Miles followed with a single through the right side.  David Jacob sent another single through the right side to score Wisdom.  Ryan Snyder doubled to center to score Miles giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

After the first inning, the Bellarmine starter, Ben Fuchs, settled into a groove.  He finished throwing six innings allowing two earned runs on nine hits and three walks.  The Hawks left eight runners on base and left runners in scoring position in three innings.

Graham Spraker (W, 2-0) was up to the challenge tossing seven innings and allowing one run.  Spraker scattered seven hits with no walks and struck out one in his second consecutive complete game.

The Knights had their only offensive output start with Austin Crutcher in game two as well.  Crutcher reached on a fielder's choice.  With two outs he stole second base.  Cole Metcalfe singled back up the middle to score Crutcher.  Spraker got the next hitter to pop up to second base to end the threat.

David Jacob and Kory Wisdom continued their on-base streak of all 14 games this season.  Brynn Martinez is riding a 13-game on-base streak.

The Hawks and Knights square off tomorrow (Mar. 22) for the final two games of the weekend series.  First pitch is scheduled for noon at QU Stadium.
