Hawks Sweep Bellarmine to Claim Tie for First in GLVC West

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team relied on all facets of their game to complete the series sweep of Bellarmine University on Sunday (Mar. 22).  Mark Niebrugge tossed a one-hit gem in game one for a complete game 4-0 shutout win.  The offense scored 10 runs in game two to complete the sweep with a 10-6 win.  Dominic Miles and David Jacob combined for six RBI in the second game for QU.  The sweep gives the Hawks an early 4-0 record on the QU Stadium new infield turf.

The Hawks (11-5, 7-1 GLVC) started off the game putting the pressure on in the first inning much like the previous two games.  Brynn Martinez singled to start the game and Kory Wisdom reached on a catcher's interference.  Dominic Miles laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line to single and load the bases.  David Jacob hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Martinez.  After a groundout moved the runners up a base, Peter Cunningham lined a single off the pitcher's foot that landed between the first and second baseman.  Wisdom scored on the play to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Mark Niebrugge (W, 4-0) did not need much as he dazzled in his first start this season.  Niebrugge baffled the Bellarmine (9-9, 3-5 GLVC) hitters allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts.  Niebrugge tossed a complete game seven inning shutout to start the doubleheader on Sunday.

The Hawks scratched a couple more runs across in the fourth inning on a JP Meyer ground out that brought home Ryan Snyder and a Justin Blechle singled that scored Peter Cunningham.

The Hawks went on to win 4-0 in game one.

The Knights took their first lead of the series in the first inning of the second game and added a second run in the second inning.

Jason O'Brien (W, 1-1) entered the game with the bases loaded in the second inning and was able to induce three groundouts that scored just one run for the Knights.

The Hawks struck in the fourth.  With two outs, Justin Blechle walked.  Brynn Martinez was hit to move Blechle to second.  Kory Wisdom sent a hard hit ball to the left side that was misplayed by the shortstop.  Dominic Miles made the Knights error cost them with a two-strike single through the left side to score two runs.  David Jacob doubled to score Wisdom and Miles giving the Hawks a 4-2 lead.

Austin Crutcher led off the fifth inning with a solo homerun to bring the Knights within one run, but O'Brien stopped the bleeding.

The Hawk offense responded again in the bottom of the fifth inning with three RBI singles through the left side.  With runners on second and third, Dominic Miles singled to score Justin Blechle.  David Jacob followed with another single through the left side to score Brynn Martinez.  Peter Cunningham also singled in the five-six hole to score Miles from second.  The Hawks took a 7-3 lead after five innings of play.

Bellarmine responded with a two RBI double in the sixth inning.  Jason O'Brien got the next hitter to ground out to end the inning and end his day.

Jake Wehde came in for the seventh inning and allowed one run, but struck out the side to keep the Hawks with a 7-6 lead.

The Hawks added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the seventh to provide Tommy Hager with a 10-6 lead in the eighth.  Hager tossed a perfect eighth with one strikeout and Teddy Rule came in for the ninth inning and shut the door to complete the sweep.

David Jacob was three for five in game two with three RBI and a run scored.  Dominic Miles was two for four with three RBI and three runs scored.  Peter Cunningham was one for three with two RBI.

The Hawks welcome Northwest Missouri State University for a midweek single game on Tuesday, Mar. 24.  The first pitch at QU Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
