Hawks Fall to Bearcats in 10-9 Slugfest

MARYVILLE, Mo. - A total of 17 runs were scored in the first five innings in Maryville, Mo. on Tuesday (Mar. 17), but the bats fell silent for both teams in the later innings.  Northwest Missouri State University outscored the Quincy University baseball team 10-9 with both teams scoring one more run in the final innings.  QU and NWMSU combined for five homeruns as Brynn Martinez, David Jacob, and Tommy Hager knocked out homers for the Hawks.

The Bearcats (9-11) started the scoring in the first inning on three singles and a walk, but Brandon Ley got out of the bases loaded jam allowing just one run.

The Hawks (7-5) tied the game when Brynn Martinez led off the top of the third with a round-tripper to right field.  David Jacob launched a solo shot down the right field line to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead two outs later.

The Bearcats answered with three runs off two singles and two doubles to retake the lead 4-2.

Peter Cunningham led off the fourth with a single to start the Hawks' response.  Two outs later, Justin Blechle singled to right to score Cunningham from second.  After a hit batter and a walk, Dominic Miles came up with the bases loaded.  Miles was hit as well to tie the game 4-4.

The Bearcats reached base on a hit batter in the bottom of the eighth.  After a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, Steven Garber reached on an error by the QU first baseman to score Garrett Fort and take a 10-9 lead.

The Hawks got a runner on in the top of the ninth when Brynn Martinez reached on a single with one out.  With two outs, Martinez looked to move into scoring position, but was picked off to end the game.
