Hawks Sweep Day Two to Take Series 3-1 over UIS

SAUGET, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team showed up with the sticks today totaling nine runs in each game of the doubleheader against the University of Illinois Springfield on Monday (Mar. 16).  QU sparked a comeback after an early deficit in game one to win 9-6.  The second game the Hawks took control early and finished off UIS 9-1 to win the series 3-1.  The Hawks scattered 40 hits this weekend in the four-game series.

Quincy (7-4, 3-1 GLVC) scored in the top of the first of game one when Brynn Martinez rounded third and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

The Prairie Stars (5-8, 1-3 GLVC) scored in the first inning on a balk and added two more runs in the second inning on an RBI single and a first and third play.

QU knotted the game at three in the third inning when David Jacob grounded out to second for an RBI.  Dominic Miles later scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks hit their groove in the fifth when Kory Wisdom and Dominic Miles hit back-to-back doubles.  Wisdom scored on the Miles double and Miles would later score on a sacrifice fly by Peter Cunningham.  Ryan Snyder joined the action with a double to left center to score David Jacob giving the Hawks a 6-3 lead.

The Prairie Stars responded with a two-run blast in the bottom half of the fifth inning to pull within one run.

With one out in the sixth,  Justin Blechle tripled to left and Brynn Martinez brought him home with a sacrifice fly to buy a little insurance.

QU would add two more runs in the seventh when Matt Marek singled to score Dominic Miles.  Gordon Gundaker doubled down the left field line to bring Marek around to score giving the Hawks a 9-5 lead.

UIS notched one run in the seventh, but Teddy Rule came in to shut the door with two outs to give the Hawks a 9-6 win.

Kory Wisdom stayed hot with a three for four game and two runs scored.  Dominic Miles went two for three with three runs scored and an RBI.

Mark Niebrugge (W, 3-0) came in for relief in the second inning and earned his third win of the season.  Niebrugge allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  Teddy Rule notched his second save of the season.

In game two, the Hawk offense was rolling again.  In the first inning, Ryan Snyder hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kory Wisdom.  An error by the shortstop scored Dominic Miles and David Jacob later in the inning to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.  

The second inning was more of the same for the Hawks as they chased the Prairie Stars' starter out of the game without recording an out in the second frame.  Kory Wisdom singled to left to score Brynn Martinez and Justin Blechle.  Ryan Snyder grounded out to score Wisdom.  Peter Cunningham singled to score David Jacob for the fourth run of the inning.

Jake Wehde (W, 2-0) came in for relief in the second inning and tossed five and two thirds innings allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk.  Wehde struck out five to earn his second win of the season.

Brynn Martinez hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to score Gordon Gundaker.  Kory Wisdom singled to right field to score Justin Blechle to give the Hawks a 9-0 lead in the fifth.

The Prairie Stars notched their only run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning after a leadoff single and a couple ground outs brought one run across the plate.  

Matt Norton and Evan Cahn toed the rubber for the last two innings.  Norton faced the minimum in one inning pitched with two strikeouts.  Cahn also faced the minimum in one inning pitched with one strikeout.

Kory Wisdom finished off his impressive weekend with a three for five effort knocking in three RBI and scoring two runs.  Justin Blechle was two for five with two runs scored.  

The Hawks travel to Maryville, Mo. to face Northwest Missouri State University tomorrow (Mar. 17) in a single game starting at 2 p.m.
