Hawks Split with Prairie Stars on Day One

SAUGET, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team split the Great Lakes Valley Conference opening weekend doubleheader against the University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday (Mar. 15).  UIS went up 5-0 in game one.  QU scored four runs in the eighth inning, but could not scratch across the game-tying run.  In game two, the Hawks scored 10 runs and Graham Spraker shutout the Prairie Stars with a complete game two-hitter.

UIS (5-6, 1-1 GLVC) got on the board in the first inning of game one with a sacrifice fly.  The Prairie Stars scored three runs in the third with an RBI single and a two RBI double. Illinois Springfield scored their fifth run in the fifth inning on an RBI single.

Jake Peterson (L, 0-2) started game one for the Hawks (5-4, 1-1 GLVC) and tossed seven innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

The Hawks found an offensive spark in the eighth inning.  JP Meyer reached second base on an error by the third baseman.  Justin Blechle walked with one out.  After the second out, Peter Cunningham doubled to left field to bring home Meyer and Blechle.  Gordon Gundaker launched a two-run bomb to left field to bring the Hawks within one run.  QU would not score in the ninth inning to fall 5-4.

Christopher Irwin (W, 1-1) threw seven innings of scoreless baseball for UIS.  He allowed eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The second game was a different story for the QU offense.  The Hawks scored early and often with two runs in the top of the first on a two RBI single by David Jacob.  Kory Wisdom and Dominic Miles scored on the play.

David Jacob put the Hawks on the board again in the third inning when he popped a two-run homerun to right center to score Dominic Miles.

UIS had four errors in the game.  The Hawks scored one in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, and four in the sixth to blow the game open.

Graham Spraker (W, 1-0) picked up his first win of the season with a complete game two-hit shutout.  Spraker had four strikeouts and no walks in the QU 10-0 win.

Kory Wisdom was four for nine with two runs scored on the day.  David Jacob was two for five in game two knocking in four RBI on a double and homerun.  Peter Cunningham was two for four in the first game with a double and two RBI.  Gordon Gundaker was two for four in game one with two RBI and his second career homerun.  Ryan Snyder was three for four with and RBI and a run in game two.
