Hawks Could Not Comeback from Early Deficit to Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team fell to Missouri Western State University 7-4 on Wednesday (Mar. 11) after falling in an early 5-0 hole after two innings.  The QU bullpen held MWSU to two runs the rest of the game, but the Hawks could only manage four runs on 11 hits.  QU left 12 runners on base in the game and twice ended the inning with the bases loaded.

Jason O'Brien ran into trouble early as the Hawks' (4-3) starter.  O'Brien allowed seven hits and five earned runs in two innings to the Griffons (11-5).

The Hawks got on the board in the top of the third inning.  Brynn Martinez singled with one out.  Kory Wisdom sent a single through the right side to move Martinez all the way to third.  David Jacob reached on a fielder's choice that scored Martinez from third.  Wisdom was safe at second on an error by the first baseman.  Both runners were left stranded.

Jake Wehde came in to pitch for the Hawks in the third inning and effectively halted the Griffon offense.  Wehde tossed three innings allowing four hits and striking out two.  He allowed one run in the fifth inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, Justin Blechle led off with a single through the right side.  JP Meyer reached on an error by the third baseman and both Blechle and Meyer moved up a bag to put two runners in scoring position with no one out.  Ryan Snyder grounded out to the shortstop, but scored Blechle and moved Meyer up to third.  Peter Cunningham followed with a sacrifice fly to score Meyer helping the Hawks to pull within 5-3.

The Hawks threatened again in the top of the fifth inning.  With one out the Hawks had the bases loaded, but the next two hitters struck out and popped out to end the inning.

Mark Niebrugge and Braden Shull both threw a scoreless inning in the sixth and seventh respectively holding the Griffons to a 6-3 lead headed to the eighth.

With two outs in the eighth, Ryan Snyder singled to left.  Peter Cunningham followed suit with a single to the shortstop.  Brynn Martinez beat out a single to the third baseman to load the bases.  AJ Martinez got Kory Wisdom to ground out to the first baseman to end the threat.

The Griffons tallied one more run in the eighth inning to push their lead to 7-3.

David Jacob started the ninth inning with a single to second base.  Jacob later advanced to second on a catcher's indifference.  With two outs, Justin Blechle doubled down the right field line to score Jacob.  AJ Martinez got a strikeout the very next hitter to give the Griffons a 7-4 win.

Brynn Martinez was two for five with a run scored.  Kory Wisdom collected three hits in five at bats.  David Jacob was two for five with an RBI and a run scored.  Justin Blechle was also two for five with an RBI and a run scored.

The Hawks will travel to GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. to play the University of Illinois Springfield in the first official Great Lakes Valley Conference games of the season.  QU will be the away team on Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 14-15) with first pitch of both doubleheaders scheduled for 12 p.m.
