Hawks Win Tight MIVA Match at McKendree, 3-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played a tight match with the MIVA's newest member McKendree and the Hawks came away with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 29-27, 30-28) win on Sunday (Feb. 8) over the Bearcats in Lebanon, Ill.

The win was the Hawks' (6-5, 1-3 MIVA) first in conference play since a home sweep of IPFW on April 6, 2013. It was also Quincy's first road win in MIVA play since a win at Grand Canyon on March 14, 2010.

On Sunday, the Hawks were outstanding against McKendree's attack, allowing the Bearcats to hit just .120 for the match, while piling up 11 blocks. The match was close the whole way with 52 tie scores and 23 lead changes over the four sets. The teams combined for sideouts on 65.9 percent of all rallies.

Offensively, junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) led the Hawks with 14 kills (.385). Junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) put down 12 kills (.310) to go with eight digs.

The Hawks looked like they might get a win in Set 1, taking a 17-12 lead after a 3-0 run with senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) on the serve. But the Hawks only strung together two straight points just once the rest of the way as Maalik Walker finished the set with a kill to give the Bearcats (3-8, 0-5 MIVA) a 1-0 set lead.

The second set was tied 22-22 before the Hawks reeled off three straight points, getting a double-block from Gamache and sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and McKendree had two straight hitting errors.

Set 3 went back-and-forth between the two teams with both having chances to end the set late. McKendree had match point at 24-23, but Kelso put down a kill before Lawson's ace gave the Hawks a 25-24 lead. Andy Schnittker answered with a kill, but Gamache gave the Hawks another set point with his own kill.

The Bearcats then scored two straight to take a 27-26 lead, but senior outside Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) recorded a kill, Gamache got an ace and Cavanaugh put down a kill to give the Hawks the win.

In Set 4, the Hawks hit .394 as a team as Lawson, Kelso and Pranger combined for 10 kills on 13 swings with no errors. The set still remained close, though, as the Hawks had eight of their 28 service errors in the frame.

McKendree had set point at 24-23, but Cavanaugh's kill evened the score. A Quincy service error gave the Bearcats another set point, but Lawons put down a kill before Pranger and sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) combined on a block to give QU a 26-25 lead.

Wyatt Patterson's kill tied the score at 26-26 after a McKendree timeout and Pranger's kill gave Quincy another lead, 27-26. The teams continued to trade points until Gamache gave the Hawks a set point, 29-28, before Nolan Rueter could not put his attack in play to give the visitors the win.

The Hawks hit .222 as a team. Kelso and Cavanaugh had six kills each, while Pranger added five to go with three aces. Fanfulik handed out 37 assist and had nine digs and a team-high five blocks. Freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a match-high 10 digs.

Jared Wilcox had 14 kills and Patterson added 12 to lead the Bearcats, who finished with eight blocks and seven aces.

The Hawks return to the court on Thursday (Feb. 12) at Lincoln College in an exhibition match. Quincy resumes MIVA play the following night (Feb. 13) at Lindenwood. First serve in St. Charles, Mo. is set for 7 p.m.
