Hawks Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set match, 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11), on Friday (Feb. 13) night against Lindenwood in MIVA action at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.

The fifth set was tied 9-9, but the Lions rallied for a 5-2 run to close the match and get the win.

In Set 1, the Lions (4-4, 2-3 MIVA) jumped out to a 12-7 lead before the Hawks (6-6, 1-4 MIVA) rallied with an 8-2 run, capped by a kill from junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West). The teams traded points for the most part until the Lions took a 23-22 lead.

Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) then dumped a kill before Lawson and sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) combined on a block to give the Hawks a 24-23 lead. Following a Lindenwood timeout, redshirt-junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) served for the set and the Lions attacked into the net to give the Hawks the win.

The teams traded sideouts in the early portions of Set 2 before the Lions reeled off four straight points to take a 10-6 lead they would not relinquish.

The Lions took a 9-6 lead in Set 3 before the Hawks went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-11 lead. The run was capped by three straight kills from junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), Rogan and Kelso.

The set was tied at 21-21, but the Hawks reeled off the next three points – the last on a Lawson kill that gave QU a 24-21 lead. After a Quincy service error, Lawson and senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) combined on a block to give the Hawks the set win. Fanfulik was efficient in the frame, feeding the middle and outside effectively to help Quincy to a .345 hitting percentage.

The fourth set went back-and-forth early before Quincy went on a 3-0 run with three straight kills from Lawson, Rogan and Kelso. The Hawks built their lead up to 16-12, but the Lions scored the next four points to start an 8-1 run that gave them a 20-17 edge. QU cut it to 23-22, but the Lions got a sideout before Logan Jarus and Jake Duckworth combined on a block at set point.

The Lions scored four of the first five points in Set 5 before the Hawks rallied to cut the deficit to 6-5 on Rogan's back-to-back kills. Quincy finally tied the set, 9-9, on two straight hitting errors against Lindenwood. After that, though, the hosts scored five of the last seven points to take the 15-11 win.

Lawson led the Hawks offensively with 13 kills (.152), while Rogan added 12 kills (.281). Each had seven digs. Fanfulik had a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs. Gamache finished with nine kills (.121) and six digs. Redshirt-junior libero Tim Hill (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) had nine digs from the back row.

Lindenwood out-hit the Hawks, .301 - .195 and held a 7-5 edge in service aces. Four players had double figure kills for the Lions, led by Duckworth and Kyle Overby, who had 15 kills apiece.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday (Feb. 14) night at Pepsi Arena when they take on King (6-2) at 7 p.m. in nonconference action.
