Kelso's Big Night Leads Hawks To 3-1 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University rebounded from a tough defeat on Friday at Lindenwood and came away with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20) win over King at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 14) night in nonconference action.

Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) put together a career night with 14 kills on 17 swings with no errors for an .824 hitting percentage. His kill total matched a career high and his hitting percentage ranks among the best in recent QU history.

The Hawks (7-6) and Tornado (6-3) were never separated by more than two points until the final points when the hosts reeled off three straight to take the set. Junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) put down consecutive kills and sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) combined on a block to close the set.

In Set 2, the Hawks hit .462 on their way to the win. The game was tied at 21 apiece before two straight errors gave Quincy a 23-21 lead. Fanfulik and Kelso went up for a block to take it to set point. Following a King sideout, Kelso's kill gave the Hawks a 25-22 win.

The Tornado scored the first three points of Set 3 and never trailed as they picked up their offense by hitting .333 in the frame. The Hawks had it trimmed down to 23-22, but the visitors got a kill before an error by Quincy gave King the set.

The Hawks needed to rally from behind in Set 4. They trailed 12-9 before Pranger got on a run at the serve, getting two aces to help Quincy score five straight points. The Tornado responded and took a 17-16 lead, but the Hawks answered with a 7-1 run with serves coming from senior outside Terence Veile (Fairfield, Wash/Liberty) and Fanfulik.

Junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) used his lefty swing to put down the final point of the match.

The Hawks hit .291 as a team, while holding King to .195. With the win, the Hawks swept the season series over the Conference Carolinas school.

Pranger (10 kills, .364) and Gamache (10 kills, .231) joined Kelso in double figures in kills. Fanfulik had his second straight double-double with 54 assists, 10 digs and a team-high five blocks.

Redshirt-junior Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) finished with nine kills and Lawson added six. Freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) led the back row with 13 digs.

Eddie Moushikhian paced the Tornado with a match-high 18 kills (.227) on 44 attacks.

The Hawks out-blocked King at the net, 9-7, and out-killed the visitors, 60-47.

The Hawks return to the floor on Friday (Feb. 20) at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena when they take on Grand Canyon in MIVA action. It will be the first of a two-game series with 'Lopes.
