Hawks Go Distance in Win Over Visiting Grand Canyon

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened a crucial two-match MIVA series with Grand Canyon on Friday (Feb. 20) night at Pepsi Arena and the Hawks came away with a five-set, 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11) win over the 'Lopes.
 
The Hawks (8-6, 2-4 MIVA) got a career-high 19 kills (.519) from middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). The sophomore hit over .500 for the second straight match and is averaging 3.67 kills per set in the last two matches.
 
The Hawks and 'Lopes exchanged the lead five times and saw 10 tie scores in Set 1 as the teams traded blows. The Hawks went up 19-17 after a block by senior John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) and junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), capping a 3-0 run.
 
Grand Canyon (7-5, 2-3 MIVA) then scored four straight points and never gave up the lead after that point to gain the early advantage in the match.
 
Gamache started Set 2 on the serve and scored the first four points for the Hawks. Kelso put down two straight kills, followed by a double block by Kelso and junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North). Rogan's kill capped the run. The Hawks never trailed in the set, forcing the 'Lopes to hit minus-.040. Kelso had seven kills in the frame and freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had five digs.
 
The Hawks reeled off four straight points in Set 3 to take a 17-13 lead with junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) serving. Rogan's service led to another 4-0 run for Quincy to take a 24-18 lead before Lawson's kill off a set from sophomore Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) gave QU the win. The Hawks hit .481 in Set 3.
 
Quincy never led in Set 4 as the 'Lopes hit .333. The visitors took a 7-2 lead at the outset, though the Hawks got back in it with two 4-0 runs and eventually tied the frame at 15-15. It was tied again at 20-20, but the 'Lopes scored the next two points before getting sideouts the rest of the way.
 
The Hawks started Set 5 on a 5-0 run, getting consecutive aces from Gamache to open the set. The 'Lopes cut the lead down to as little as 12-10 before Lawson put down a kill and Kelso and Fanfulik combined for a block to get to set point. After GCU converted a sideout, Lawson's kill ended the match, 15-11.
 



Quincy hit. .279 as a team while holding Grand Canyon to a .200 mark. Kelso had a team-high eight blocks to go with his 19 kills. Pranger was very efficient with 13 kills (.571) on 21 swings, while adding five blocks.
 
Gamache had a double-double with 11 kills (.267), 12 digs and three aces. Fanfulik recorded his third straight double-double with 53 assists and a team-leading 14 digs. Lawson added 10 kills (.071) and Bruckner had 12 digs.
 
Shalev Saada led the 'Lopes with 17 kills (.467) – all coming in the final three sets. Gerrard Lipscombe had 12 kills (.162) and Ryan Mather added 11 (.051).
 
The Hawks and 'Lopes return to the floor on Saturday (Feb. 21) night at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
