Visiting Hawks Fall at #12 Ohio State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played its third straight ranked conference opponent on Friday (Feb. 6) night, taking on No. 12 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes came away with the 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) win over the Hawks in MIVA action at St. John Arena in Columbus.
 
The Hawks (5-5, 0-3 MIVA) were led offensively by sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), who played prep volleyball just a few miles from the Ohio State campus. Kelso finished with a team-high six kills (.385) and match-high four blocks.
 
Quincy opened the match by taking a 4-2 lead in Set 1 with three straight points coming from a kill by junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), a service ace by senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) and a block by Kelso. The Buckeyes (7-2, 3-0 MIVA) responded with six straight points to take an 8-4 lead.
 
The Hawks were able to work it back to a tie, 12-12, after Pranger scored on back-to-back rallies with a kill and a block. Ohio State then scored the next three points and never trailed the remainder of the set. QU limited OSU to a .172 hitting percentage in the first set.
 
Ohio State led Set 2, 4-3, before the Hawks rallied with a 7-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. Quincy had three kills, two blocks and an ace in that stretch with redshirt-junior Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) bookending the run with a kill and an ace.
 
Quincy still led 14-10 before the Buckeyes closed the frame with a 15-4 run, the last two points coming on kills by Michael Henchy. Ohio State used a 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead in Set 3 and never looked back, hitting .400 in the final stanza without an error.
 
The Hawks hit .098 as a team, while the Buckeyes put down 34 kills and hit .296. Quincy beat Ohio State in blocks, 8-4.
 
Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), also playing near his hometown, handed out 14 assists to go with three kills, three digs and two blocks. Pranger had three kills on five swings with no errors. Freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a match-high seven digs.
 
Three Buckeyes – Henchy, Nicolas Szerszen and Dustan Neary – had seven kills to lead the hosts. Christy Blough had 27 assists.
 
The Hawks continue their road trip on Sunday (Feb. 8) when they take on McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. at 4 p.m. The Bearcats are in their first season in the MIVA.
