#2 Lewis Too Much For Visiting Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team suffered its second straight road defeat to one of the country's top teams as No. 2 Lewis took a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-20) win over the Hawks in MIVA action on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon in Romeoville, Ill.

The match also completed the road portion of the Hawks' MIVA schedule. Quincy has just one road contest remaining – against nonconference foe Missouri Baptist – on March 30. Nine of Quincy's final 10 regular season matches will be played in Pepsi Arena.

On Saturday, the Flyers (14-1, 5-0 MIVA) were able to command the match, both offensively and defensively. Lewis hit .387, while holding Quincy to a .138 hitting percentage.

Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) led the Hawks (9-8, 3-6 MIVA) with nine kills (.385) on 13 attacks.

In Set 1, Lewis opened with a 13-2 run, mostly on the service of Greg Petty. The Flyers limited Quincy to a minus-.235 hitting percentage in the opening frame.

Lewis jumped out to an 8-4 lead in Set 2 before Kelso served up four straight points for the Hawks. Later in the set, the Hawks scored three straight points with redshirt-junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) serving to tie the frame at 16-16. Kelso capped the run with a kill. The Flyers responded by scoring the next three points before going on to the 25-21 win.

The Flyers opened up a 6-1 lead in Set 3 and the Hawks were not able to go on a long run to chip away at the deficit.

Junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) finished with six kills while junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) had four kills each. Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out a match-high 25 assists and led the team with four digs.

Petty paced the Flyers with 10 kills (.400) while Geoff Powell added eight (.467). Lewis won the battle at the net with eight blocks to Quincy's six.

The Hawks return to the court on Wednesday (March 4) at 7 p.m. when they take on Lincoln College in an exhibition at Pepsi Arena. The regular season resumes Thursday (March 5) at 7 p.m. against Hannibal-LaGrange.
