Hawks Fall To Top Team In Nation on Thursday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened up a tough portion of its schedule on Thursday (Feb. 26) night at No. 1 Loyola Chicago. The Ramblers remained undefeated and came away with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) win in MIVA play.

The Hawks (9-7, 3-5 MIVA) held their own against Loyola (12-0, 4-0 MIVA) playing three close sets with the top team in the nation.

The Hawks surged to a 9-4 lead in Set 1 using a 4-0 run with junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) serving to force a timeout by the Ramblers. The hosts responded with by going on a 13-5 run to take a 17-14 lead.

Quincy fought back and took a 22-21 lead on a 3-0 run with junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central)  serving up consecutive aces. Reigning National Player of the Week Thomas Jaeschke followed with back-to-back kills before sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) converted to tie it at 23-23. A block by the Ramblers, followed by a Quincy hitting error gave the set to Loyola.

In Set 2, the Ramblers recorded sideouts on 84 percent (16-for-19) of their serve-receives and went on for the 25-19 win. Loyola then shut down the Hawks' offense in the third set, forcing Quincy to hit minus-.050.

Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and redshirt-junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) each had seven kills to lead the Hawks offensively. Kelso, the MIVA's leader in hitting percentage, did nothing to damage that title, hitting at a .538 clip. Fanfulik dished out 22 assists and he had a team-high seven digs.

The Ramblers were led by Jaeschke, who put down 12 kills and hit .500 in the match. Owen McAndrews had 10 kills on 11 swings (.909). Loyola hit .365 on the night.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 28), but the task ahead doesn't get any easier. They take on No. 2 Lewis at 4 p.m. in Romeoville, Ill.
