Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brendan Bittner

Truman State Handles Quincy in Regular Season Finale

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team opened up an early lead, but Truman State used a 19-0 run over a stretch over nearly five minutes in the first half to take control and cruise to a 103-85 win over the Hawks in the regular season finale on Thursday (Feb. 26) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks entered the game knowing they owned the No. 10 seed in the GLVC Tournament. The only drama to settle was the location of their first round game. That was settled Thursday night as the Hawks and No. 7 seed Bulldogs will turn around in just three days for a matchup in Kirksville, Mo. Tip-off time on Sunday (March 1) is set for 3 p.m.

On Thursday night, the Hawks burst out to a 9-3 lead on the strength of the four seniors in the starting lineup for 12th-year head coach Marty Bell. Guard T.J. Riggs (Bloomington, Ill./Ashland University) knocked down a corner 3-pointer off an inside-out pass from center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Iowa Lakes CC) to open up a 5-1 lead. Guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) then knocked down a mid-range jumper before Schaben polished off the run with a two-handed slam from Jones' nifty feed.

The fun stopped there for the Hawks (13-15, 7-11 GLVC). Daniel Billy's layup with 15:52 remaining in the first half opened up a stretch of 19 straight points for the Bulldogs (19-9, 11-7 GLVC), who turned the Hawks over 12 times in the first half, turning them into 20 points.

By the time the run was over, the Hawks trailed 26-11 with 11 minutes to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs took a 52-34 lead into halftime after shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.

The Hawks never got the lead under 14 points the rest of the way as the visitors shot a blistering 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from the field in the second half, including a 4-for-8 mark from long range.

Jones paced the Hawks with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists. He shot 9-for-15 from the floor. Quincy shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65) in the game. Redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) bullied his way through the paint to finish with 19 points and five boards.

Schaben had 11 points while Riggs added six on a pair of 3-pointers. The Bulldogs won the battle on the glass, 38-35. Isaac Gardner knocked down six 3-pointers, including five in the first half, to lead the Bulldogs with 23 points off the bench. TSU leading scorer Seth Jackson scored 19 points and was 7-for-15 from the field. Cole Myers hit four threes to finish with 14 points.

The Hawks will now look to make a run in the GLVC Tournament, beginning Sunday at 3 p.m. at Truman State.
