Hawks Fall to Truman In GLVC Tournament First Round

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Things looked promising early for the Quincy University men's basketball team on Sunday (March 1) afternoon in the GLVC Tournament first round game against Truman State.

The No. 10-seed Hawks led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 37-34 lead into halftime, but the No. 7-seed Bulldogs were scorching from the field in the second half and pulled away for a 84-64 win to advance to the conference quarterfinals in St. Charles, Mo. on Thursday.

It was the Hawks' third defeat to the Bulldogs this season and their second in four days after dropping a 103-85 decision on Thursday (Feb. 26).

Quincy (13-16) scored the game's first seven points with two buckets and two steals from junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West). Eneogwe then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by a trey from senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) to push the Hawks' lead to 16-5.

QU led by 11 points on multiple occasions throughout the first half before the Bulldogs closed the half on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to 37-34. Truman's top two scorers, seniors Seth Jackson and Reed Mells combined to play just 20 minutes in the first half as both were forced out early with foul trouble.

In the second half, Truman (20-9) took its first lead of the game, 40-39, but the Hawks went on a 7-0 run on baskets by Jones, junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and Eneogwe to retake a 46-40 lead.

After a couple free throws by senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa), the Hawks led, 48-42.

It was at that point that Truman pulled away. The Bulldogs went on an 18-0 blitz to turn the six-point deficit into a 60-48 lead. The 'Dogs forced Quincy to shoot 0-for-5 in that stretch with five turnovers. QU went without a field goal for nearly nine minutes.

The Hawks never got closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Bulldogs shot 60.6 percent (20-for-33) from the field in the second half.

Jones scored 12 points for Quincy and redshirt-sophomore Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) added 11 to join Eneogwe in double figures. The Hawks shot 45.8 percent (22-for-48) overall, but hit 50 percent (6-for-12) of their 3-pointers.

Seth Jackson led all scorers with 24 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Mells added 16 points. The 'Dogs outscored the Hawks in the paint, 48-24, and won the battle on the glass, 30-28, including an 18-8 advantage in the second half.

The Bulldogs will play No. 3 seed UW-Parkside in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinal in St. Charles, Mo.
