Hawks Slow Down Maryville in Crucial GLVC Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team is jockeying for position in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings and pulled out a key 75-65 win over Maryville on Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks currently sit in 10th place overall in the GLVC standings and have secured their place in the GLVC Tournament. QU will open the tournament on the road on March 1.

The teams battled through a defensive first half that saw both teams shoot under 40 percent, but the Hawks (13-14, 7-10 GLVC) took a 29-25 lead into halftime. Quincy led by as many as nine in the first half, 24-15, after a 3-pointer by junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West) with 4:40 remaining.

The Saints (10-16, 5-12 GLVC) cut the halftime lead down to 29-25 with a 4-0 run in the finale minute that came after an alley-oop slam by Eneogwe off a lob from junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods).

In the second half both offenses kicked into gear as the teams traded baskets and the lead several times in the opening minutes.

Trae Pemberton hit a 3-pointer for Maryville that gave the visitors a 41-40 lead with 15:04 to play, but the Hawks scored the next six points – the last basket on a transition layup by sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast).

The Hawks never trailed after that run and the lead never slipped under five points. The Hawks led by six, 58-52, with 5:49 to play, but then went on a 7-0 run with five points coming from junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) to pull away.

Hoover finished with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while shooting 6-for-7 from the floor. Redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) scored 12 points in 20 minutes off the bench.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) chipped in 11 points before leaving the game with a leg injury in the second half. Eneogwe was the final QU player in double figures with 10 points and five boards.

Pemberton led the way for the Saints with 17 points, but he shot just 6-for-15 from the field. Armon Provo had 13 points.

Quincy held the Saints to a 40.7 percent (24-for-59) shooting clip. Meanwhile, the Hawks connected at a 66.7 percent (16-for-24) rate in the second half to finish over the 50 percent mark. The Hawks also won the battle on the glass, 33-30.

The Hawks will wrap up the regular season on Thursday (Feb. 26) night at 7:30 p.m. when they celebrate Senior Day at Pepsi Arena against Truman State.
