UMSL Defeats Visiting Hawks in Final Seconds, 65-63

ST. LOUIS - The Quincy University men's basketball team got the look it wanted on the final possession, but a 3-pointer by junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit the back iron to send the Hawks to a 65-63 defeat at Missouri-St. Louis Thursday (Feb. 19) night at the Mark Twain Building.

The Hawks trailed, 65-63, after Aareon Smith hit two free throws with 4.6 seconds to play. After a Quincy timeout, senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) pushed the ball up the floor and handed it off to Des Jardins, who came free off a screen on the left wing, but his shot was just long.

The loss puts a significant dent in the Hawks' chances to host a GLVC Tournament first round game at Pepsi Arena.

Quincy (12-14, 6-10 GLVC) were led offensively by junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who had 14 points apiece. Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West) totaled 12 points as the third Hawk in double figures.

The Hawks had no answer for Smith, who scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to lead the Tritons (17-9, 9-7 GLVC).

The game featured 14 tie scores and 15 lead changes as neither team held more than a seven-point advantage.

Quincy led by four, 61-57, with 2:49 to play after McGaughey split a couple free throws. Smith then hit a mid-range jumper, and after the teams traded misses, Smith sank a couple at the line with 1:25 left to tie the game.

Tylor Wimbish hit a short jumper in the lane with 39 seconds left to give UMSL a lead. Des Jardins missed a 15-footer on the next possession, but Eneogwe followed it up with a vicious slam to tie the game at 65-65.

Smith created contact on the next trip down the floor and drew a foul, sinking both free throws to set up the Hawks' final shot.

The Hawks shot 37.9 percent (11-for-29) from the field in the second half after clicking at a 51.9 percent (14-for-27) clip before halftime.

The Tritons won the battle on the glass, 36-31. Quincy, which had 10 turnovers in the first half, commited just three giveaways in the second half.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 21) to take on Maryville in another key GLVC West game.
