Viken, Topps Lead QU Offense in Arkansas

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team opened its season this weekend (Feb. 13-14) at the 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. and the Hawks finished with a 1-3 record. The event was supposed to continue Sunday (Feb. 15), but inclement weather forced the cancelation of Quincy's final two games of the weekend.

The Hawks dropped both of their games on Friday, 6-2 against Upper Iowa and 7-1 against Missouri Western. On Saturday, Quincy picked up its first win of the season with a 9-5 decision over Missouri Southern before falling to Lindenwood, 4-2.

Senior shortstop Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) led the offense by hitting .533 while reaching base at a .588 clip. Meanwhile, senior outfielder Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) hit .500 with four extra base hits, including two triples and a home run. She slugged 1.071 and had a .563 on-base percentage.

Senior Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) led the Hawks in the circle with a 2.15 ERA. She struck out 11 batters in two starts. Freshman Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) also started two games in the circle and earned her first career win against Missouri Southern.

In their win over MSSU, the Hawks pounded out 17 hits, led by Viken and Topps, who had four hits apiece. Topps was a home run shy of the cycle and drove in five runs. Quirk also pounded a three-run homer that stretched Quincy's lead to 7-1 in the third inning.

The Quincy offense, which averaged 4.5 runs per game last season, also had two other players bat .400 – junior first baseman Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/Tennessee Martin) and Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.).

The Hawks will now have nearly three weeks off before returning to the field at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. QU will play 10 games in six days in the Sunshine State from March 6-11.
