Lady Hawks Fall to UIndy in Three-Point Shootout

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell to the University of Indianapolis in a three-point slugfest that totaled 28 threes combined.  UIndy had three players score twenty points or more in their 95-79 win on Thursday night (Feb. 12).  The Lady Hawks scored 14 threes led by Maggie Cunningham with a career-high six deep balls and Carly Bettencourt with four long-range baskets.  UIndy answered with 14 threes of their own and shot 56% from downtown.  The Lady Hawks shot 42.4% from three and 49.2% from the field in the game, but the Greyhounds hit 61.8% of their shots in the game.

The Lady Hawks (13-9, 8-6 GLVC) hit two three-pointers to take an 8-5 lead early, but the Greyhounds (10-12, 7-7 GLVC) turned the tide quickly.  Kelly Walter hit a three for the Greyhounds to give them an eight-point lead five minutes into the game.

Carly Bettencourt knocked down back-to-back threes in the next two possessions.  Both threes were assisted by post players as QU was working inside out to start the game.  Bettencourt's three trimmed the lead to two points.

The Greyhounds went on a 9-3 run to regain a multiple possession lead.  Their lead grew to 17 points in the first half, but the Lady Hawks started to chip away late.

Trailing by 15 with three minutes left in the first half, Maggie Cunningham hit a jumper followed by a three to cut the lead to 10.  Carly Bettencourt knocked down another trey with one minute and 36 seconds left to pull within seven points.

UIndy scored three points on a layup and back-end make of two free throws.  

Anika Webster converted a layup to bring the lead back to eight.  With just a few seconds remaining, Cierra Young stole the ball and fed it ahead to Carly Beebe who was fouled in the act of shooting.  She would hit one free throw to send the Lady Hawks to the locker room trailing 54-47.

Maggie Cunningham hit five threes in the first half and led the team with 19 points.  Carly Bettencourt finished the first half with 12 points all coming from behind the three-point line.

QU shot 58.6% from the field in the first half and 52.4% from three, but UIndy fired 67.7% from the field and 64.3% from three.  QU hit 11 threes in the first period of play.

UIndy kept their hot hand in the second half, but the Lady Hawks cooled a bit.  Quincy went on to hit just three more three-pointers in the second half.  Indianapolis knocked down five treys.  

The Greyhounds took their largest lead of 20 points with just three minutes left in the game.  

The Greyhounds were just three of eight from the line in the first half, but scored 10 of 11 from the charity stripe in the second half.  

The Lady Hawks were just seven of 16 from the line in the game.

Maggie Cunningham led the Lady Hawks with 26 points and a career-high six threes.  Anika Webster scored a career-high 17 points and led the team with five rebounds.  Carly Bettencourt finished with 12 points on four threes.  

Nicole Anderson led UIndy with 23 points.  Princess German scored 22 points and Kelly Walter finished with 20 points.  Sarah Costello scored 14 points for the Greyhounds.

The Lady Hawks will welcome Saint Joseph's College to Pepsi Arena on Saturday, Feb. 14.  QU will be hosting their "Creating Memories" game with tip-off starting at 1 p.m.
